"command not found" in terminal window

I am trying to get XP to boot using http://www.ehow.com/how_7410818_use-windows-xp-not-boot.html. I Booted with Slax. After activating "ntfsprogs" online, it calls for the command "sudo fdisk -l" but what I get is "-bash: sudo: command not found". I am trying to view the connected file systems -- I can't find anything else under "help" command to use.

The process calls for using the "sudo..." command in several ways -- but if it won't accept "sudo" nothing can happen.

I'm kind of left hanging here, please advise a solution ASAP. Thanks

Hi George ... not sure what you are trying to do, but you do not need 'sudo' in Slax -- that # sign on the Konsole prompt means you are already full root, no need for pseudo. So just run #fdisk -l.

Which will show you what partitions are there. Assuming it shows an sda2 as type ntfs, then you might want to #mkdir /mnt/sda2;mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2.

If that succeeds the you can examine files on the ntfs volume. Not sure how this will help you to boot XP, though.

Thank you, bb. My XP won't boot and I found the website http://www.ehow.com/how_7410818_use-windows-xp-not-boot.html that shows how to use Slax to fix it. It says to use the "sudo" command as I mentioned. After finding the "/dev/sda1" partition (sda2 in your example), I am supposed to execute "sudo ntfsfix /dev/sdaX". "This will check and fix common errors found on NTFS partitions and schedule a full disk check on your next reboot."

I will try the process while eliminating the "sudo" and see if it pans out.

Interesting article. However, Slax has never had sudo in my long use of it, even back to the 4.n.n version you come up as root. "Sudo" is a way of allowing a common user to pretend to be root for one command. It means 'super user, do' (some command). But you're already superuser with Slax.

No matter, just ignore the sudo instruction and proceed, and good luck with your repairs. The rest of the instructions looked OK to me.

Have you considered booting with an XP install cd and choosing the Repair option when it is offered? It has fixboot and fixmbr, commonly used to fix booting problems [especially after botched linux bootstrap install attempts]. Note, the install cd doesn't have to be the one that came with [or didn't come with] your pc -- you could borrow someone else's disk for this maneuver.
