Cannot start X11 on initial boot

Hi,
Usung Slax 6.1.2 on USB drive with Acer Aspire One D260 netbook.

The boot process hangs on 'Starting up X11 session manager' and remains there forever.
If I ALT+F6 I get the expected 'Welcone to Slax' screen with the login information of root and toor. After I login I run 'startx' however this brings up a screen with;

Fatal server error;
no screens found
init: Connection reset by peer (errno 104); unable to connect to X server
init: No such process (errno 3): Server error

Repeating the process and running xconf first does not help though I do get the message that xconf was sucessful.

The USB install is good as Slax boots on other computers so it seems that the problem is restricted to the Acr netbook.

I hope this is enough information for someone to help me get around this issue.

Thanks for the info. :) I don't like that error. It's familiar to me on newer computers with Slax. Try out Porteus at porteus.org (it has a later copy of X) or see if you can upgrade the X installation--I have experienced this problem on a newer computer model personally and it is no fun. There *are* modules here that just might help you out--I wonder if your Acer is Atom based?--an Aspire One I've worked with booted Slax okay. If nothing else, you could try using Vesa mode at the syslinux menu. And if that doesn't work, I would definitely either plan on investing a lot of time to get X to work right by recompiling, adding modules, or by seeing if reconfiguring it will kick it into gear. Good luck--I know this answer was really generic, but I still hope that it helps you out.

Thanks agreiman,
I tried Vesa - no luck.
The Acer has an Atom processor.
I'm not clever enough to recompile or reconfigure X though I will have a look at potreus.org.
I often use bootable USB stick's with other live o/s and they all work fine, it is only Slax that is stubborn, and even then only on the Acer.

Just a follow up...
I tried Portues, a few versions of Puppy and Zen-mini and have come back to Slax.
The other's I tried are good however all suffered from issues mostly depenedency problems with installing applications or being slow and clunky.
I have always like Slax so I'm persevere with this loading problem I have with Slax on my Acer.

Slax is great, so easy to use.

You need to give each distro a fair run and amount of time to genuinely evaluate it and get used to it's specific behaviour.
When I started with slax 5.1.8 , I too found it buggy and tends to crash. Later when I slowly learn to use it, I overcame the problem of it crashing etc.

I started having the same problem. I have an old hp mini311. slax is on a usb deal. Slax worked fine for a good while, several months. After i did some windows updates and installed some software in windows 7, the slax stopped working. i formatted the usb drive and reinstalled slax from my ISO. no luck. I re-downloaded the iso with no modules. and it still hangs on starting x11 gui. It wont give me a console either, says no console objects found. like maybe it's trying a pxe boot or looking in the wrong directory.

I'm pretty sure it's a computer problem not slax. from some updated graphix firmware or maybe (here's my paranoid theory) there is an onboard embeded system which runs the OS in a sort of vm. and that embeded rtos has been updated.

Hi everyone, I got the same problem. I use Slax 6.1.2
but you can try this :
after you stuck in "'Starting up X11 session manager" , press Alt + F6 , type root and password toor
> cd /etc/X11
> mv xorg.conf xorg.conf.old
> mv xorg.conf-vesa xorg.conf
> startx

now you can start Slax but on my Netbook (Toshiba NB520) I just get 800x600 max.

I hope this will help you.
