Slax 6.1.2 conclusion: disappointed

After days of trying my conclusion of slax is: disappointed.

The most interesting modules are kinky or unusable:
WiFi: I cannot get to start it automagically, like in Windows.
VLC: it will not start.
FireFox: not any version is able to start (and I need just this important browser).
Chrome: it makes slax crash.

After messing up slax I thought to start 'Fresh' from the menu...
Forget it, all the messed up stuff is still in the modules, you need to remove them and all their dependecies by hand (do not chose the wrong!).
After that everything works, but not in the 'virgin' ('fresh') state, as I understand.

Slax 6.1.2 for now: disapponted, lot of work to do to make it usual...

@PaPyRene

there is alot of knowledgeable people on this forum
if you have the timethey will help you.
I'm no expert but I have sure asked my fair share of questions.

WiFi - wicd-1.5.4 (see if that works)
VLC - I've tried this, it is hard to make work
(but if you try use older vlc then open konsole type vlc
it will show you what else you need as a dependency)
FireFox - I thought this came as default browser (but same thing
type in konsole firefox and it will show you what is missing)
Chrome - with chrome I stopped trying this also, also have to
type in on konsole google-chrome this one gave problems
so I stayed with firefox (it has better plugins)
maybe use as live disk with each one of these, once you get the program to work
save the modules the restart, when you have them all then load them as live to test
so you don't have previous changes messing you up
well I know this one was long winded but

hope it helps

Hi,

It appears that something may be wrong with your files.

I have been using slax on two PCs, booting from the USB, from HDD in WinXP,
and Firefox works perfectly, at least. Other apps I have not tested.

I thought to use slax as my Swiss knife ;-)

There are 2 weak points in slax:

1/ the modules that are not 'checked' enough to work without problems

2/ dependencies in modules that break other modules

I propose to split the list of modules: one with known good working modules and one with all the rest.

Suggest you install slax afresh and solve the problems one by one. Also mention how and where did you install slax. Which is the first problem you want to tackle?

Im in a little better situation,,,

after some fight to understand how things work on Linux, I managed to have wireless connection and internet surfing (simply by adding a module in the \slax\modules\ directory, FINDING and running the application to set the connection... (I really have difficulties to find the simplest things on Slax/Linux. :( )

That was almost everything I need for a Live USB Slax. However I also need to open pps/ppt files and thats the beggining of my Nightmare,,,
How hard its to install a program!!! goddamnit!!!! Look at the list of dependencies of OpenOffice 3.2.0!!!! it feels like the Slax is lacking everything to run any new program you could need.
Why cant I simply go to Konqueror and double click a single installation file??

IMO, its very confusing for a "nongeek" to use Slax/linux system...

even with the help of people here, most of the time I just cant follow their instruction...

I really have a bad time navigating through the tree directories... I cant find nothing I want; I cant run programs/files double-clicking it... (konqueror always asking me which program should be used to open it... I know which one, but dont have a single clue wheres it located :X)

I would like to never have to use the Konsole cause all that command lines are so nonsense...

Last but not least, the thing CRASH often!!
I always heard that Linux was a non crash system... but my Slax keep freezing and making me boot with the PC button cause neither mouse or keyboard works.
Is that because Im using it on a PenDrive?? or even installed on HD it will crash?

Get a nice file manager - Krusader

Slax's 6.12 is almost 3 years old, so it's librraries /dependecies files is really oudated . There are times you need to stick to older version of softwares / programmes:-

Notwithstanding what is shown as dependencies for openoffice , my previous experience of openoffice is there is no other dependencies other than JRE (even this is actually optional). But I can't be certain with newer /current version of openoffice (3.30 / 3.40) as I had switch to newer slax remix.

Slax remix v08
http://www.mediafire.com/?rrprviubflos6

The last version is actual slax remix v09 but I can't no longer find it on the net (except for russian version).

"Last but not least, the thing CRASH often!! " . If you are savin to the usb thumbdrive formatted as fat filesystem , then the "crash" problem is due to file corruption.

Either use a linux filesystem or slaxsav.dat (file formatted internally as linux xfs filesystem.

Every one, just forget the guy, he shouldn't waste time to find how to use Slax, just leave him alone.

Ty jcsoh,

now the OpenOffice is running but it wont open any pps/ppt file. :(

I cant understand what you mean by:
"Either use a linux filesystem or slaxsav.dat (file formatted internally as linux xfs filesystem."

Can you tell me one Linux that is not 3 year old like Slax, but still boot and run fast?? I´ll try the Slax Remix.
I tried Ubuntu 12.04 but the thing takes forever to boot and its slower than windows7!!!

PPS & PPT file - MS Powerpoint ?
Openoffice Impress is suppose to be able to open powerpoint files . I can't be sure as I don't use powerpoint or impress.

Chances are your thumbdrive is formatted as FAT filesystem.
By linux filesystem , I mean filesystem such as xfs etc.
You can format using Gparted.
http://www.slax.org/modules.php?action=detail&id=319

The disadvantage will be that the linux filesystem will not be recognize by window,

If you look at slax's iso , there is a file named slaxsav, zip. If you extract it , there will be a bunch of slaxsav.dat of various sizes , of which you can select one. There is a readme file for it's usage.
Basically you placed the slaxsav.dat on your thumbdrive and chage slax's cheat code to changes=slaxsav.dat , so that slax will save it's setting to the slaxsav.dta file. The file is formatted internally as xfs filesystem.

Read up on slax's manual on changes= cheatcode:-
http://www.slax.org/documentation_boot_cheatcodes.php

Try Porteus distro (google it). It started of as slax remix.

yes, MS Powerpoint... lot o people use it.

yes, I created the pendrive in windows, using a tool called Lili Usb Creator. its in FAT for sure.

Will the slax´s cheat code procedure fix the problem if I keep it FAT??

"Will the slax´s cheat code procedure fix the problem if I keep it FAT??"

Not really . It is better to run a filesystem check on the fat partition from time to time.

open a console
If your fat partition is on dev /sdb1

umount /dev/sdb1 (umount to unmount the partition)

dosfsck /dev/sdb1 -wav

dosfsck = dos filesystem chek
-w = write changes immediately
-a = automartic repair
-v = verbose mode (v is optional)

then

mount /dev/sdb1 to remount the fat partition.
