Sound through headphones and speakers

I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop, and when I plug in headphones to the jack I still hear sound through the laptop speakers. I had this same problem on Knoppix and couldn't figure it out.

I've looked around in control center, but there doesn't seem to be any settings that I could change.

Anyone have any ideas?

Does this happen with Windows? I don't think this is a OS problem more than it is a hardware problem.

I've never had this problem in Windows before.

I just tried using alsamixer, it won't let me adjust the headphone column.

Says my chip is RealTek ALC262 if that helps any.

Typed it in, said alsa set to default. I ran alsamixer, headphones are set to 00 and I'm still unable to adjust them. I can adjust all the other bars. Pretty bizarre!

-My bad, I guess my last couple of posts I wasn't signed in...?

Anyway, I found this forum with a guy who had a similar problem. He fixed it by updating his distro:

Lots of posts about the Sony Viao laptops as well, where in Ubuntu and FC, there was the same problem. They ran the alsa-control script to restart the card and everything worked after that. Unfortunately Slax doesn't have the alsa-control script, thats why I said to use the

amixer -q set "Headphone" on

root@slax:~# amixer -q set "headphone" on
amixer: Unable to find simple control 'headphone',0

Once again, I don't know what this means.

Thanks for your ongoing help Mark!

Well I found somewhat of a solution. In alsamixer I used "m" to mute the front output. The headphones still say they are set to 00, but I can hear sound out of them, but not the laptop speakers. I'm happy! :)

Thanks again everyone!

The 'h' of headphone must be capitalized, as in "Headphone".

Well now there are the Slax-Remix versions, they contain a recent kernel more hardware is supported, so there is a good chance that your problem is solved bye using Slax-Remix.

hi,

useful addition to "/etc/rc.d/rc.local"
if the notebook||netbook makes no sound:

amixer -q set "Master" 75% unmute
amixer -q set "Speaker" 100% unmute
amixer -q set "Headphone" 100% unmute

bye,
Bill
