Come on. You need to supply more information than you have if you expect to be helped.

1. What steps did you take to install slax?
2. What file system is your pen drive?
3. How did you run the bootinstall file?
4. What operating system are you using when you try to install slax?
5. Are you administrator on the system you use to install slax?

Hi Everyone,

I'm getting exactly the same error...

1. What steps did you take to install slax?
- tried from both .tar & .iso... Copied files to USB drive, and ran bootinst.bat from the command line on the usb device.
2. What file system is your pen drive?
- FAT32 (tried FAT16 too).
3. How did you run the bootinstall file?
- from cmd, f:/boot/bootinst.bat
4. What operating system are you using when you try to install slax?
- XP SP3
5. Are you administrator on the system you use to install slax?
- Yes.

Not sure what else to say, I've followed the (very few & simple) intructions, and every machine I boot it on gets most of the way then comes up with the "/linuxrc: line 287: cannot open dev/console: no such file" error...

Thank you for any advice :)

@Apools
first of all - please try slax in VirtualBox to make sure that it works correctly (iso is not damaged etc)
if it's ok then do as follows on your real PC:
1) boot slax in debug mode: press TAB on syslinux selection (KDE, VESA, copy2ram etc), type 'debug' and press enter.
2) continue booting by pressing 'ctrl+D' until you see 'linux live end, starting slax'
3) now type two commands:
'ls dev/' and 'ls -al'
this is the output which is demanded:

first command should reveal 'console null' - if they wont be there then try to create nodes manually:
mknod dev/console c 5 1
mknod dev/null c 1 3

Second command shows whole catalog structure (boot, dev, root, proc etc).
please let me know how it works for you.

EDIT:\\
also have a look on AceX solution here:

Considering the comments are two years old, I am wondering whether or not you are still in operation. If you are, then I would like to inform you that I have had the same problem that the above individuals have had and I have followed your instructions in attempting to debug the booting process. I got down to doing the nodes manually but the boot still would not finish up. So, I started to try to make my own adjustments around the problem and I finally got to the Slax interface. Here is what I did. As you may or may not be aware of, linuxrc, which I presume to be the boot script, for some unknown reason creates another directory called union. The union directory has a /dev directory, and it is in this directory that the script looks for console and null. If you change directory to union/dev, mknod console c 5 1 and mknod null c 1 3, and then Ctrl-D, you may be able to finish up. However, once you shutdown and start over again, you come up with the debug problem again and you have to remake console and null. Now the problem is how to make the two nodes in the union/dev to stick. Could you give me advise on how to accomplish this? If you have an answer, could you please share it here? I will be looking for an answer for awhile. If you have no answer, then unfortunately, I will have to abandon Slax and its new approach and go back to the other linux distributions. I do like the modular approach, so I am looking forward that you have a solution.

back to basics:
check md5sum of slax download before installing
also check the integrity of the usb stick..
