It seems Slax won't die so soon :) Several persons from two companies are willing to invest in further Slax development. Both parties agreed to preliminary draft of an agreement, so it seems that Slax development will be restarted when the legal documents are signed. This is good news for me and I hope for you too! :) I will let you know when I know more.
Is your SLAX7 alpha available somewhere? I have a system development here and slax is one of my candidates. If there is real chance that it will live on, I'd like to start testing with slax7. With several common goals, I could also contribute to the development.
Very good news Thomas!!! I love Slax, I begin my "linux life" with Slax, put it into my hd for more than 5 years and keep using it to make my life easy. Data recovery, revive an old pc,erase virus, almost everything is possible man. I wish the best for you. Thanks man and sorry for my english.
Thats good , i'm a user of slackware 13.37 and playing around with school wikipedia offline edition. I have it loaded in a webapp of apache-tomcat directory. Also got php files in tomcat parsing from using a bridge. So can use php or jsp for search function (with MySQL)The idea is for schools in Ghana with power but no internet to be able to access an encyclopedia.
A DVD of school-wikipedia is also available, but a usb pen-drive loaded with the encyclopedia would be a better option. Since i'm a fan of slackware anyway installed slax onto a 4gig pen drive using unetbootin. Very interesting and slick distro
i have tomcat module and jre module (tomcats working) and will play with loading school wiki onto it.wiki is aroiund 2.9 gig It could be a useful vehicle for individual users to get access to a 20 volume equivalent encyclopedia and one good reason for the existence of slax!
Great!!!
I love the neatness of Slax, and of this web site too!!!!
I'm really happy to hear it.
I hope one day I'll have enough time to learn more about OS programming (much more better than the blinking, colored, messy kids game than I have to develop now for work :-P)and so contribute to it.
Thank you for your work!
Hey Tomas, just want to bug you a bit regarding SLAX restart. First, good news!
Second. I've been using Slax on usb drives, bootable CD's and even as a server setup - because (a) the installation is "just copy files", (b) it is majorly Salckware compatible and non-specific to the the way the software is packaged and (c) kinda neat that all configuration changes are stored separately from the "original system".
I want to say, however, that it is going to be very important to keep the "finesse" of the Slax brand, meaning - clever decisions about the _default_ modules and features, the tools selection and the quality of "out-of-the-box" configuration.
Modern days the Linux distributions become more and more like a "crap pile" due to "crowdsourcing". They are mainly by 2 ideas: "system is a software, so lets put everything NEW and ALOT" and "woa, this is a lot or work, so lets make a portal and let the COMMUNITY do it". Honestly, I think this is bad and wrong, because it leads to "bloatware" of rather poor quality.
The real System these days is all about clever design decisions (tools are already there) and carefully made "feature choices".
So, kinda suggestion, to put forward a list of MUST BE qualities which Slax absolutely has to possess and stick to it when making decisions.
To me, for ex., it's like
(1) "Just copy" installation to anywhere, _reasonably_ compact but all necessary UNIX things in it ( we want UNIX after all, not yet another "nice screen booter" )
(2) Ability for "always fresh" files; also the option to boot the "always fresh" part in RAM memory, and save changes to arbitrary location ( that dictates the "resonable" size of a full-setup below 1GB, preferably not more than 500M )
(3) Being split into big parts, "modules", which are not single program "packages" but "big features" - like "Office", "LAMP Web server", "Wine for Games", "X11", "KDE" etc
(4) Compatibility with "raw sources" and slackware-rpm-deb 3rd party packages (means the clever selection of base libraries versions, besides other things)
(5) //// There is a REAL need to figure what to do with monstrous modern versions of KDE and Gnome... I believe that there is time for a "desktop" which is polished graphically (eye candy, GOOD FONTS, shadows, animation etc) but provides ONLY windows management and nothing more. Probably even XFCE is too much of crap and too little on visual quality. Persoanly I vision something along the TWM line but with fonts, "GUI system bus" and modern technology. All the taskbars, clocks, gadgets, launchers etc must be absolutely separate.
Update: the agreement is not signed yet, it needs some time. But you can already find out which two companies are willing to support Slax by looking at the footer of this page :)
Yeah ... but wont that be money based operating sistem ?
No more gpl licence ?
I glad for you if u can follow your dream and get some money from it , But we would like to have something free 2 :) something like the fedora project maybe ? 1 main free system , and 1 base "specific targeted" payed sistem
Thanks for everything and looking forward to the development of the situation :)
The money is for Tomas's time to spend to develop slax in lieu of working elsewhere or on something else for money. Bear in mind at time he pay other developer to work on specific programme to incorporate into slax.
The deal has been SIGNED yesterday.
I'm officially working on Slax since today.
The plan is to update and release new Slax version in 4 months.
I will need some beta testers, I'll make a signup form for you some time soon (there's nothing to test yet, though).
Wow! I feel so happy for you Thomas M and happy for us all (the users) too. Slax is a neat OS. My kids use it in their netbooks for school stuff and I use it here at home and at work. I even have a server running on Slax. Looking forward to version 7. I'm sure it'll be a great release!!

Is Kickstarter.com an option for you? (if the above does not work out)
I think that I came late :(.
I knew Slax last week, and saw that's great!!, but I don't see new modules or new versions of Slax.
I want to help. What I can do for Slax go on? Tell me, please.
Do you change Slax by another distribution?. Who is?
I used my old slax CD several times when I was in crisis. Specially I can remember that day when my HDD crashed and I was in the move. I have no option to deliver my job to client. Fortunately my Slax CD was with me and I have done the job! This story was about 5 years back but I can't forget till now. Thanks to Tomas. Great news!. Go ahead....
Slax 7 Отличная новость! Slax 6.12 , установленном на флешку пользовался с удовольствием.Пожалуй ни одна сборка Linux не обладала такой скоростью и стабильностью. Желаю удачи Вам Tomáš Matějíček !

Your Alfa SLAX7 is available somewhere? I have a development system Slax and one of my candidates. If there is no real chance to live, I would start testing slax7. Some common goals may help develop.

Just curious, in all the legal hoopla could you possibly lose control of your project?
