WARNING: this version is now obsolete, to get slax-remix-v06 check out this thread:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=60839

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING: it's an unofficial slax release so please report any bugs, problems or requests in this thread only.

WARNING: please do not upload any modules created by squashfs4-tools (sq4) on slax site cause it may confuse users of normal slax-6.1.2 and make bigger chaos in modules section, use external sites instead, thanks.

Slax-remix FAQ
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Who may be interested in slax-remix?
- people who are having troubles with compilation of custom-kernel like described in this HOWTO: http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=53917
- users with hardware not supported or not fully supported by standard Slax-6.1.2 kernel: 2.6.27.27
- power users who wants to try/test out features of zen kernel, more info: http://zen-kernel.org/included-code
- bleeding-edge users who are not afraid of using (not necessarily well tested) slackware-current software - bugs expected :)

2. How does it look? (old v03 release)
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/34/slaxremixv03.jpg

3. How to get it?
download from here:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/jjnmmz0ndkl/slax-remix-v05.iso
md5sum: 83dd2735763b5b9a6f26a997d696feb1

4. How to make live-usb version?
Same as in normal Slax: extract content of iso file to your usb stick and run bootinst.bat (Windows) or bootinst.sh (Linux) from /boot folder to make it bootable.

5. Which modules are included?
7 modules by now:
001-core.lzm,002-xorg.lzm,003-desktop.lzm,004-kdeapps.lzm,005-koffice.lzm,007-firefox.lzm and squashfs4-tools

6. Why 006-devel is not included by default?
2 reasons:
- mediafire.com gives 200MB as maximum on one file
- i presume that not everyone needs development package, if you still want it - check Download section.

7. Why 008-extra-stuff is not included by default?
I would like to keep 008-extra-stuff outside of slax-remix.iso cause i'll treat it as ServicePack (sounds familiar isn't it?) package. Any urgent fixes will be pushed into this module.

8. Is there a PAE enabled version of slax-remix?
Yes, if your PC has 4GB of RAM (or more) and you want to use whole amount, you can try PAE version:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/zzmemm5jkwn/slax-remix-v05-PAE.iso
md5sum: d394bd16897dffad8a9b5bf126cabcd8
Be aware that PAE version contains 2 modules only: 001-core and 006-devel. You need to take other modules from standard remix release and create your own version of GPU drivers/Virtualbox etc. Remember: kernel dependent modules, from non PAE slax-remix wont work with this release! Please share your work and post download links in this thread (if any).

9. How to convert slax-6x modules to the new squashfs4 format which is used in slax-remix?
You need to have squashfs4-tools activated. Open konqueror, press right mouse click on sq3 (slax-6.1.2) or sq4 (slax-remix) module(s) and choose proper conversion option.
screenshot:
http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/1662/snapshot1k.jpg
You can also use jayfloods 'Module Tools' - cli or GUI version. You'll find them in 008-extra-stuff.
Be aware that slax-6.1.2 doesn't support new sq4 format and slax-remix doesn't support old sq3 format so conversion must be done in case of moving modules between those two releases.
Please don't make any module operations on FAT partition as this filesystem can't handle symlinks correctly and converted module can be broken.

10. How to remaster sq4.lzm (squashfs4) module?
You need to have squashfs4-tools activated. Open konqueror, press right mouse click on sq4 (slax-remix) module(s), choose 'Extract sq4 Module..' option. Content will be unpacked to folder with a module name. After making all necessary changes press right mouse click on the folder and choose 'Build Slax sq4 Module' option to pack everything back.

11. How to get my wireless card to work?
If you have a troubles with getting your wifi card to work you might have to download 008-extra-stuff module. It contains a firmware which is needed by some wifi cards, wpa_supplicant needed to create secured wireless connection and sns-tool utility which will let you setup your network settings in an 'easy way'. Launch it from console by typing sns-tool or through KMenu - it's placed under Slax-Extra-Stuff submenu.

12. Any plans for switching to KDE-4x?
Not for now. Reason is simple: don't want to make slax-remix bigger than 200MB. All KDE-4* fans will have to wait for Slax-7 or add KDE-4 themselves.

13.Why slax-remix default modules are little bit bigger than in normal slax-6.1.2?
They are packed with smaller block size, wider explanation can be found here:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=54463&anchorid=55131#postid55131

14. How to setup national language support in slax-remix?
WARNING: Settings below are only an example. You need to change all polish values like 'pl_PL.UTF-8' to proper one for your country.
1) to automount ntfs partitions with national characters in file/folder names you have to:
a) replace /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g symlink with a bash script:
#!/bin/bash
/bin/ntfs-3g $1 "$2" -o locale=pl_PL.UTF-8

b) make it executable 'chmod +x script' and save as /slax/rootcopy/sbin/mount.ntfs-3g
2)edit /etc/profile.d/lang.sh file:
a) comment out 'LC_ALL=C' and 'export LANG=en_US' locales
b) replace following string 'export LANG=en_US.UTF-8' with 'export LANG=pl_PL.UTF-8'
this file should look like here: http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=56910
3) download and activate two packages (second one needs conversion to sq4):
a) http://www.mediafire.com/file/dg5jzgzamqf/glibc-i18n-2.11.1-i486.sq4.lzm
b) ftp://ftp.slax.org/SLAX-6.x/multi-language/6.1.2/polish/slax/base/polish.lzm
4) press ctrl+alt+backspace to restart KDE, enjoy national language support!

Proof of concept (russian language):
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/2313/15703595.png

Be aware that some older apps still lacks of UTF-8 support, if you are not happy with it you can stick with traditional encoding (thanks Blaze89!):
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=57933

15. How to report a bug?
Try to recreate the bug first: boot slax-remix in 'always fresh mode' with basic slax-remix modules only. If the error appears again, post relevant bug report in this subject. Please attach links to the screenshots and logfiles (examples: /var/log/messages, /var/log/dmesg, /var/log/Xorg.0.log) if possible. For the log files please use external sites like pastebin.com and post web links only. Make sure that the bug wasn't created by the user error - save my free time! Thanks.

CHANGELOG
Changes comparing to slax-remix-v04:

New kernel - 2.6.33-zen1, features: http://www.h-online.com/open/features/What-s-new-in-Linux-2-6-33-933312.html and http://zen-kernel.org/2.6.33-zen1-dust-remover
kernel config changes:
- default power governor changed to 'cpufreq-ondemand'. To activate power saving features of your processor use 'Power-Save Mode' script form 008-extra-stuff
- legacy support in mousedev is compiled in (*) - hopefully all mouse issues are gone - thanks to many people for bug reports
- Magic SysRq key is back - thanks to cpl_payne
- 'different security models' enabled so dazuko should be compiled without an error (unfortunately it doesn't support 2.6.33 kernel yet)
- added multi scsi luns check - thanks to ophiry
- enabled 'force module unloading' - this option is required by 'Power-Saver Switch'
Boot loader
- new Syslinux boot image - thanks to Blaze89 for help and others for suggestions
001-core
- added 'export LC_ALL=C' string to /etc/profile.d/lang.sh file (in case of switching to UTF-8 encoding this line must be commented out or removed)
- disabled annoying 'new mail' notification in /etc/login.defs file
- option psmouse proto=imps enabled in /etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf - 'tapping' issue closed, thanks to andre5775 and mark for bug report
- updated all packages to latest available versions (2nd of March)
002-xorg
- qiv image viewer replaced by gpicview - blame Blaze89
- cursor theme copied from slax-6.1.2 - Blaze89 fault

006-devel
- kernel headers updated to 2.6.33 version
007-firefox
- flashplugin updated to 10-r45 and moved back from 002-xorg to here. Other browsers are not able to find flashplugin without firefox libs anyway, more info:http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=48514
008-extra-stuff
- added mloop script - thanks to jayflood
- added 'Power-Saver Switch' script - thanks to nimh for suggestion
- added 'Slax-remix FAQ' - thanks to francois.e and others for inspiration
Squashfs4-tools:
- added Konqueror integration with conversion script between sq3 and sq4 formats - thanks to Bicephale for suggestion and help
Download section
- ati-fglrx updated to 10.2 version - hopefully there will be no issues with it (2 extra patches applied - thanks to gentoo and arch communities)
- VirtualBox bumped to 3.1.4
- vbox-guest addition is missing for now - package builds up correctly but slax hangs just after initialization of xorg-server (issue fixed - vbox-addons are back in official repo)

UGLY HACKS
1) 001-core - 'mount' binary is used from older util-linux-ng 2.14.1 package to avoid annoying lag during boot time (newer mount binaries tries to mount empty CD/DVD five times! - anyone know how to change it?)

SLAX REMIX KNOWN BUGS:
1) dazuko doesn't compile against 2.6.33 kernel. Solution: need to remaster 006-devel module, look at the EDIT part:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=58164
(bug closed)
2) PXE boot is broken as per v05. Solution: to be fixed in remix-v06 (bug closed)
3) udevadm hangs on various computers. Solition: wip (bug still opened)
4) cli in syslinux is displayed incorrectly. Solution: to fix it just change 'menu cmdlinerow 27' to 'menu cmdlinerow 23' in /boot/slax.cfg (bug closed)
5) RaLink RT2860 wifi card doesn't work with 2.6.33 kernel. Solution: add blacklist rt2800pci to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and reboot remix-v05 (bug closed)
6) slax-remix-v05 doesn't boot with lvm partition. hangs during activation of lvm groups. Solution: device-mapper package needs to be removed as it's now included in lvm2 package. To be done in remix-v06 (bug closed)
7) /etc/hosts file has old entry left from slackware-current. Solution:
127.0.0.1 darkstar.example.net darkstar
should be changed to slax default one:
127.0.0.1 slax.example.net slax
(bug closed)

any help with resolving them is highly appreciated

I finally managed to download 'glibc-i18n-2.11.1-i486.sq4.lzm'...

Once my keyboard layout has been changed manually i'm statisfied
with the console and NTFS partitions but the FAT32 ones display
double square characters in place of the accented letters or special
characters. The UTF-8 method as suggested here fails to support
my French-Canadian configuration, it seems. Sorry about the bad
news...

who downloaded slax-remix-v05-PAE? it's not announced yet - can be broken or damage your PC!
to be honest - i have just check it and it's really broken! file removed, wait for reupload :)

@jayflood
little bit tired 'machine' - need some rest...

@Bicephale
glibc-2.11.1 is never than 2.7 or 2.9 :) look at the FAQ answer 14. Blaze89 got it to work without UTF-8! i like bug reports - that's the way i learn linux :)

@xtreme
flash is back to 007. waiting for report....

@Gam-Phon
very interesting... i presume that newer hal version mounts all pluggable media to /media folder (this is purpose of this folder anyway) instead of /mnt. when you right mouse click on lzm module in /media (not system:/media) you should get full conversion menu. There must be a way to change hal rule to mount everything in /mnt. Need to find it.

@beny
all scripts and tools in v05 still produces sq3 modules. sq4 can be created in the way mentioned in FAQ: 9 and 10 only.
question to everyone: Do you want me to switch totally to sq4 in v06? i can integrate squashfs4-tools with 001-core. Replace original (sq3) mksquashfs with (sq4) mksquashfs so all cli scripts (dir2lzm, txz2lzm etc..), jayflood tools will produce sq4 modules. i have an idea how to keep sq3 tools in the system, conversion to sq3 in konqueror will be still possible. What about the block size? leve it with default 128k value or change to 256K - as it is in Slax-6.1.2 - (smaller module size but longer boot time and less responsive system on older PC's)? What do you think?

@Blaze89
спасибо,
procedure is the same, just replace kernel and patch version. i did it below already:
wget http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/linux-2.6.33.tar.bz2
tar -xvjf linux-2.6.33.tar.bz2 -C /root/
cd /root/linux-2.6.33
wget http://downloads.zen-kernel.org/2.6.33/2.6.33-zen1.patch.lzma
lzma -d 2.6.33-zen1.patch.lzma
patch -p1 < 2.6.33-zen1.patch
cp /usr/src/linux/.config .
make oldconfig
make
rm /usr/src/linux
ln -s /root/linux-2.6.33 /usr/src/linux
cd /usr/src/s2-liplianin
make
make install

@em
you are quick!
your link added to Download Section - thanks :)

@forum
i presume that you need to adjust mixer settings in alsa - search slax forum for an answer, heres good start:

thanks to everyone for the feedback :)

question to everyone: Do you want me to switch totally to sq4 in v06?

YES please do so. I am getting tired of building(rebuilding) some of my modules, only to find out that they don't work. Since the kernel versions are not the same (those modules are not and will not be compatible with original Slax 6.1.2 anyway)

@beny
forgot to mention - slackyd works like a harm!

@Go2Sq4 and others
heres a patch which converts your slax-remix-v05 into full sq4 system:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/ozydn5xmoy3/009-full-sq4-system-patch.sq4.lzm

WARNING: you must delete existing squashfs4-tools package to use it!

it has big number in name - 009 as it must be applied as the latest - over whole slax installation. after activating, all scripts (txz2lzm, dir2lzm, jayflood tools etc) will create sq4 packages. Still - there's an option to create sq3 package: under konqueror or by using jayfloods tools (had to tweak it - sorry). Block size has been raised to 256K. Let me know if you like it and in case of troubles or malfunctions.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

slax-remix-v05-PAE is now official:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/zzmemm5jkwn/slax-remix-v05-PAE.iso

Enjoy!

Thanks Fanthom, i hadn't realized yet that v2.11 comes
after 2.9 and 2.7 before that!... My KMenu is translated
correctly, it seems, so i wonder why i should need to
load the GLibC-i18n & KDE-i18n languages files as well.

I didn't mean that 'Slax-Remix v05' was totally broken
when it comes to French-Canadian support. There was
a time whe i judged this support using three criterias:
konsole/'KWrite', NTFS partitions, FAT32 partitions...

A new addition to my trouble-shooting arsenal was made
lately: multi-language applications which are supposed
to switch their GUI to the "default" locale automatically.

According to this evaluation method i've already posted
a set of configuration files capable of meeting the 1st
three conditions. You have to realize that Russian is
probably like French, both are treated as a mainstream
language. French-Canadian (fr_CA) is a subset of French
(fr_FR), what i need is to emulate what appears to be a
similar kind of language like Greek perhaps, or at least
one which is latin for starters.

I'm sorry for the bad news, i learn by emulation and it
is a slow process but i'm confident the matter will get
cleared someday, when the right blocs will fall into their
place and settle i suppose... In any case, this doesn't
stop me from working both on SQ3 and SQ4 modules:
if it tests fine under 'PureOS-Light', 'Slax v6.1.2' and
'Slax-Remix v05' then i can really feel satisfied!

;-)

Thanks Fanthom, yours looks like a good job, and saving many (including myself) the effort of self-compiling.
I wish to stress one particular feature of special relevance to slax users, it being often run from usb flash drives: starting right from 2.6.33 kernel, there is trim support. See

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIM

This should mitigate downgrading performance over lifetime of usb sticks. Anyone more technically savvy can confirm this?

which option should be enabled to support this?

i'm glad that you sorted another issue :) will try to update v06 to newest userland possible.

@jlmcp

I watch this behaviour since v04 when I boot my largely extended remix from DVD. If I boot the same from USB or a memory card all is fine. So maybe you can try this way (or give some more information e.g. if you use an unmodified v05 or if you added some modules...)

@jlmcp

Can you try another computer and maybe another USB stick? How long did you wait when you see this message. What I can say from my experience with this issue is, that (in case of DVD) you must wait a _long_ time (4-5 mins) and then it continues booting _sometimes_ (and sometimes it stucks forever with this message).
I hear it for the first time that USB sticks shows this too (and I tried different sticks and flash cards without problems until now - I always use XFS as filesystem).

patching 2.6.33 kernel is optional, will add it in v06.

@jlmcp
sorry but i'm really lost in this udevadm issue. What i can suggest is to boot latest working release (v03 in ahz case and v04 in your) make a copy of drivers which are loaded:
lsmod > working.drivers
then blacklist them in slax-remix-v05 (maybe except aufs and squashfs). Try to boot v05 with everything blacklisted - in case of succes - remove some drivers from blacklist file and try again. Do this until you find the buggy driver. I know it's a lot of work, but i have no other ideas as for now.

@islavak
will have a look what i can do with it :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PXE boot issue fixed now and to be included in v06. it had nothing to do with httpfs from initrd, just configuration and permissions were wrong (what a lame!). Bug closed now.

@fanthom

I have done what you suggested with v03:

1. Booting
2. lsmod > working.drivers
3a. added all modules from working.drivers to blacklist.conf of v05 and blacklisted them (even aufs and squashfs)
3b. added all modules from working.drivers to blacklist.conf of v05 and blacklisted them (all but not aufs and squashfs)

Neither 3a. nor 3b. gives any change to the udevadm issue. It show the same behaviour as if you would used the original 001-core.sq4.lzm.

@islavak
both video and eth from Asus k50AB are problematic in linux,
try this package for video card:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/doj2k21nyyk/xf86-video-sis671.sq4.lzm
you may have to edit xorg.conf to get it to work, also read this:
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=34256

cant add r8168.ko to v06 as it's conflicting with r8169.ko (more users use r8169.ko), you need to follow jayflood and abhi in this thread:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=49958
just do exactly what they said. That's all what i can do about it. Sorry if it's not enough.

@ahz
in v04 i have updated all packages from 001-core to slackware current, i believe that udev-141 is causing your troubles. to confirm that could you:
a) take 001-core from remix-v03, unpack it and replace /lib directory with /lib directory from 001-core slax-remix-v05
b) boot slax-remix-v05 with newly created 001-core, try only this one module and boot in 'text mode'
in this scenario you'll have newest kernel - 2.6.33 form v05 and old userland from v03. In case of fail that will mean that kernel is causing troubles, in case of success it'll be userland (udev)

Regards

EDIT:
dazuko issue sorted out - bug closed:) looks like kernel developers in 2.6.33 release decided to move some files which are auto-gnerated during 'make *' stage from '/usr/src/linux/include/linux' to '/usr/src/linux/include/generated'. Some applications are still not aware of this and fails to build. To solve this issue you need to remaster 006-devel-remix-v05.sq4.lzm module and copy all files from '/usr/src/linux/include/generated' to '/usr/src/linux/include/linux'. To be done in v06 by default.

Bicephale - if you'll have some troubles with compilation of klamav and dazuko I can post small howto.

Cheers

hmmm... don't really know what you mean, i can guess than you didn't delete old usr.lzm and mksquashfs is trying to add new files to existing usr.lzm instead of creating new one. try to repack this module by using Konqueror.

@fanthom

Did as you described. The only module in base folder was the repacked 001-core.lzm. No modules in folders optional and modules. With this setup booting is OK - you see the login screen at last.

My workaround for now is, that I use USB-Sticks or other flash memory devices with XFS filesystem. They do not get stucked with udevadm in my experience. This is no solution in any way but I can live with it at the moment (plus I have the advantage of much faster boot speeds compared with CD/DVD).

If you have anything more I can try with this issue let me know!

@fanthom / @ahz

I attempted my other usual testing method for modified Slax variants, of booting a vmware image pointing to the .iso as a virtual CD drive. That allowed me to boot without the udev problems, although it paused for several seconds before continuing.

@fanthom

Possible bug ... well ... more of an annoyance than anything. At the boot menu (frog graphic) if you highlight a boot option and press the TAB key to modify the boot string, there seems to be some weirdness with the command line displayed below. Redundant strings, etc.

It's more than an "annoyance" when you have to fight with the
CLI field to test new modules, that's the reason why i've made
the suggestion that the boot-time splash image needed to be

to fix command line in syslinux just change 'menu cmdlinerow 27' to 'menu cmdlinerow 23' in /boot/slax.cfg

to be done by default in v06.

slax2hd is for 'real install' - no point for doing this with slax. If you still want your system like that i would recommend going with slackware. Instead of 'real install' you should try 'frugal install' - just copy /boot and /slax/folders to some partition (can even coexist with Windows) and point your bootloader to slax vmlinuz and initrd. If you use Windows you can try grub4dos, HOWTO is here:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=20957

@Bicephale

for now you can go back to kernel 2.6.32-zen6 from remix-v04, replace vmlinuz, initrd.lz, all drivers and firmware in 001-core.
Procedure is described here:
a) replace vmlinuz and initrd.gz from remix-v05 with old one from v04
b) replace /lib/firmware and /lib/modules in 001-core (remix-v05) with relevant dirs from remix-v04

In this case you'll have userland from v05 and kernel from v04. Should work and i'll try to find the way to solve rt-2860 issue under 2.6.33.

Regards

EDIT:
I have found something. Seems that there are 2 drivers which can support your wifi card: rt2860sta and rt2800pci (both buggy) Could you check - before you go with 2.6.32-zen-6 kernel - which driver is loaded in remix-v05?
type 'lsmod' and if rt2860sta is loaded try to remove it 'rmmod' and all other modules related to it. Then do 'modprobe rt2800pci' and check if you can connect. Do same replacement procedure if rt2800pci is loaded by default.

as you can see in remix-v05 both drivers are loaded and i think that they are blocking each other. Try to add:
blacklist rt2860sta to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and reboot remix-v05. If it wont help try to blacklist second driver: rt2800pci and reboot again. Let me know if you succeed, and which driver is working for you.

Thanks
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
inspired by jayfloods 'mloop' script i just wrote midnight commander association with .lzm files. If you want to try it just download, convert and activate this module (sq3):
http://www.mediafire.com/file/znnkdm2cn1m/mloop-in-mc.lzm
When done navigate to any folder with slax modules and press enter on one of them. selected module will be mounted in current directory - looks like you are 'entering' the module. After finishing the job you need to navigate out of the module and run 'rmloop' script in console to unmount it.
happy testing!

BTW. All credits goes to jayflood.

I downloaded Slax remix v05 from where they are located. I am booting it correctly and it is not working. Sadly on two machines it is not booting. I have tried several options, Slax Vesa, Slax Graphics, Slax Text Mode and it displays

File-based locking intialisation failed.

And it stays there until I shutdown the machine by pressing and holding power button. Slax version v04 works on that machine, but since there is no ps mouse port only usb port, the mouse crap does not work correctly :(, Yes the suggestions are there, but they DO NOT WORK, so thanks :)

Cg Toolkit - rejected, FAQ answer 12

@tonio
i have no clue what's causing it. remix-v05 was downloaded more that 100 times as per now - seems that it's working fine for others (at least i didn't get report about broken release). Please check md5sum, try to boot from CD, Virtualbox and other usb stick.

Regards,
fanthom

EDIT:
@Blaze89
i have found kernel bug in your second friend log file:
Mar 14 20:48:53 (none) kernel: DVB: registering adapter 1 frontend 0 (Philips TDA10086 DVB-S)...
Mar 14 20:49:03 (none) kernel: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000002f

and here:
Mar 14 21:13:28 (none) kernel: DVB: registering adapter 1 frontend 0 (ST STV0299 DVB-S)...
Mar 14 21:13:38 (none) kernel: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000031
Mar 14 21:13:38 (none) kernel: IP: [] _raw_spin_lock+0x10/0x20

weird thing is that crash happens always 10 seconds after initalization of ST STV0299 DVB-S.
I have also checked your first friend log once again and you know what? similar error:
Mar 15 01:13:45 (none) kernel: dvb-usb: MAC address reading failed.
Mar 15 01:13:45 (none) kernel: dvb-usb: no frontend was attached by 'DVBWorld DVB-S 2101 USB2.0'
Mar 15 01:14:04 (none) kernel: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000002d
Mar 15 01:14:04 (none) kernel: IP: [] _raw_spin_lock+0x10/0x20

were those machines running 'plain' slax-remix? any extra modules added containing kernel drivers? especially vb-007-3fix/mix package? Need more info about this error.

Fathom,
I guess I have found what was wrong, it has to do with lvm(On two of the machines that failed, I have Fedora 12 installed. It has by default lvm disk, slax 6.1.2 detected them sometimes and sometimes not. I am writing to you from slax v05 remix

root@slax:~# uname -r
2.6.33-zen1
root@slax:~# cat /etc/slackware-version
Slackware 13.0.0.0.0
root@slax:~# cat /etc/slax-version
Slax 6.1.2

LVM code is not working I guess, I tried with no success nohd, noauto, boot codes, in case.

it's the same 'oops' which you reported in remix-v04 thread:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=57897
and you have stated that it happened before. I think that 'Agere Modem Controller' is causing it. Please consider reporting it upstream to kernel developers - i can't help you with this i'm afraid.
b) i'll have a look on lvm issue. Hopefully will be able to get it to work under VBox :) added to bugs section.

@Blaze89
same as in tonio case - if those errors were created by dvb-007-3fix/mix package, please report them to s2-liplianin maintainer - Igor M. Liplianin.

@Blaze89
Thanks for detailed information :) Igor may need full log - you can find all errors in syslog file.

BTW now i know why fs was corrupted in first case. Kernel crashed, file system got corrupted and Slax become unbootable.

@fathom,

Unfortunately, I can't report much. The oops occur because I am using proprietary code :(, See below

This one definitely is, but with Slax it's harder to say.

The Slackware kernel has debug information in it, so we can see from
the trace that the oops occurred when the agrmodem module tried to set
up a timer (the last call was lt_add_timer()). This unfortunately
happens in the agrmodemlib.o_shipped, so there's nothing we can do
about it.

On the other hand, the Slax kernels don't have any debug information,
so it's difficult to read what's going on. In remix-v5 it appears to
oops while writing to a file in a region of mmap()ed memory. There is
no indication from the trace what code was making that call, but since
the last dmesg line was about a modem init, it may be the fault of the
agrmodem code. With remix-v4 it's trying to write to a file in
mmap()ed memory, and with this one the trace mentions the aufs module,
so the oops may have been caused by that.

So that is what I got back from a more knowledgeable person that writes code.

can it be a problem related to 2.6.33 upgrade between v04 and v05?
you can check it trying to set the modem up on another 2.6.33 (not zen).

rather not, it happened also with v04 and fedora. Must be a firmware bug so.

BTW,

Thank you for the links, when I get to work next week, If there are no newer isos, I'll download one of these to install on another machine I have at work. It looks like the proprietary part of the modem is the one being at fault and we can't do anything about it :(

@fanthom,
it is not the firmware, but the proprietary code that could be making it happen :(, but though as long as the modem works, I am a happy camper :)

I would believe that it is an lvm problem, why?, because two machines in which Slax v05 remix did not work, had Fedora 12 with lvm as the disk. I booted Slax remix v05 and choose different options and it stopped at the same place and did not move forward :(

The "proprietary code" is from LSI INC, it is restrictive, it is not GPL and one cannot review the code that they release:

"I don't remember how to start Slax in debug mode?"

From slax's documentation on cheatcode at:
http://www.slax.org/documentation_boot_cheatcodes.php

"Reboot your computer and wait several seconds until a nice graphical Slax logo appears with a boot menu (it's there usually for less then 9 seconds). Choose your desired menu entry and hit Tab key, which will allow you to edit the command line. Write your desired boot argument at the end of command line."

Use the option

" debug

... enable debug mode (and start bash several times during the boot) hit Ctrl+D to continue booting"

cause i dont know where to start.

i have downgraded lvm2 package to lvm2-2.02.40 which is used in slackware-12.2/slackware-13/slax-6.1.2 and everything works perfectly. With lvm2-2.02.61 and lvm2-2.02.62 slax-remix-v05 hangs during boot time as you described above. Moreover i wasn't able to create new lvm partition:
lvcreate -L1500M -ntest vg
this command just hangs.

Does anyone run Slackware-current with lvm2 package above 2.02.40 version? Please do this test for me:
dd if=/dev/zero of=test1 bs=1M count=100
dd if=/dev/zero of=test2 bs=1M count=100
mknod /dev/loop500 b 7 500
mknod /dev/loop501 b 7 501
losetup /dev/loop500 test1
losetup /dev/loop501 test2
pvcreate /dev/loo500 /dev/loop501
vgcreate vg-test /dev/loop500 /dev/loop501
lvcreate -L150M -nslax-test vg-test

after last command you should see something like:
"Logical volume "slax-test" created successfully"
unfortunately this command hangs in lvm2-2.02.61 and lvm2-2.02.62. Works fine with 2.02.40 version.

Thanks,

EDIT:

@islavak
i have just tried to compile rtl8111 driver and it's really simple:
a) activate 006-devel-remix-v05.sq4.lzm package
b) download r8168-8.017.00.tar.bz2 from this site:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=5&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#rtl8111B/RTL8168B/rtl8111/RTL8168rtl8111C/rtl8111CP/rtl8111D(L)RTL8168C/rtl8111DP
c) unpack and run 'autorun.sh'
d) r8168 module will be inserted now:
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/8123/snapshot1e.png
e) so set up ip adress, dns, gateway etc. If you have an internet connection go to f)
f) 'dir2lzm /mnt/live/memory/changes/ changes-rtl8111.lzm' and place changes-rtl8111.lzm module in /slax/modules dir.
g) reboot slax and check if everything is ok

Cheers

EDIT2:

@tonio
i have solved lvm issue, i believe it's all about removing device-mapper package, this is from slackware-current changelog:
a/device-mapper-1.02.28-i486-1.txz: Removed.
This is now included in lvm2.

This issue will be fixed in v06 or even 'remix-next'. Bug closed.

try this module http://www.motolink.ucoz.ru/r8168-2.6.33-zen1.sq4.lzm for Realtek 8111C netcard (2.6.33-zen1 kernel).

Download it and put it in your modules folder, then activate it by double clicking on it.
Then open a konsole (the little black TV looking icon) and type:
depmod -a
modprobe r8168

Find and run in K-Menu -> Set IP address (network-conf)
Type your configure (set up ip adress, dns, gateway etc).

OK, just for curiosity: When do you plan to release v06 (because of the fixed udevadm issue).

@ahz
to be honest - i'm not sure if udevadm issue is fixed as i can't reproduce this error in any way. I can upload 001-core with udev-151 for testing purpose. would you be interested in checking if it works now?

I dont know when v06 will be ready (v05 is just about 2 weeks old!). changelog is still too short, there's no new kernel from zen team. In v06 i would like to bump xorg-server to 1.7x branch but it depends on Amd team and their fglrx driver. Yesterday i have found this:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODA4MA
so there's a hope that some smart people will be able to port it to othes Os'es as and we wont have to wait for 10.4 release.

Did anybody tried 'Power-Saver Switch'? Does it work for you? You can watch cpu frequency changes through this command:
watch grep \"cpu MHz\" /proc/cpuinfo

There's one nice feature of slax-remix which i didn't mention yet: you can use memory of your GPU card as ultra fast swap partition.
More info you can find here:
http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/TIP_Use_memory_on_video_card_as_swap

have tried it and works nicely with my 256MB ati card (192MB was adressed) All drivers are compiled as (M) so just need to use 'modprobe' to get it working :)

Any issues, queries or requests - let me know :)

Regards,
fanthom

EDIT:
If you want to try pxe boot on slax-remix you need to do 2 things:
a) edit /boot/pxelinux.cfg/default file and change 'initrd.gz' to 'initrd.lz'
b) change default permission on /slax folder:
chmod 777 -R /slax
Now you can use Virtualbox and launch slax-remix as pxe-server (eth0 card must be in 'bridged' mode for all remix instances). After boot you can launch another Virtual Machine, press F12 and choose LAN booting option.

If everything will be ok second machine should boot directly over network :)

Enjoy!

I have a bug report.

Slax 6.1.2 - http://i44.tinypic.com/1t3juu.png
Slax remix v05 - http://i40.tinypic.com/2he953k.png

@Bicephale
thanks for your offer, just give me some time to look after it...

@beny
a) i have found this only:
Fixed udev dvd link to /dev/sr0 which was affecting various application dvd playback.
and it's not our issue - i believe it's about fixing broken symlink from /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd to /dev/sr0.
b) rc scripts tries to mount cd/dvd discs and if it's found than message doesn't appear - that's why it didnt show up when you run your slackware from dvd.
The problem is when there's no cd/dvd disc in the bay, in this case 'mount' application is searching for it and repeating 5 times which gives us nice delay during boot time. Older version of 'mount' doesnt have this behaviour.

@Blaze89
cups is a service placed in /etc/rc.d/ folder - if you want to enable it during boot time just make it executable 'chmod +x /etc/rc.d/rc.cups' This rule does apply for all services in this directory. It's not a real bug so i wont add it to bug section. Will be fixed in v06 anyway. Thanks.

This repo looks like standard one for slackware-current :) Am i wrong?

Regards,
fanthom

EDIT:
as reported by ahz - udev-151 didn't fix 'udevadm -trigger' issue for him. Looks like udev package from slackware-12.2 is the best so far. All who are affected should pick up latest working release and stick with it for a while. Sorry - i have no other ideas.

EDIT2:
@beny or anyone who is running slackware-current with xorg-server-1.7.5
could you go to the text mode (init 3) and run this command:
X -configure
WARNING: in my case this command locks the screen and whole system crashes - only hard reboot helps
I need this command working before releasing remix-v06.
Thanks

Thanks for this module. Can you give some short answers/instructions to the following questions?

1. Is this a replacement for the one that comes with current v05 remix?
2. How must I use it, so that it does not conflict with the v05 built-in one?
3. What are the differences between your module and the ones that come with v03-v04?

ahz,

1 & 2. I tested this module in the Slax 6.1.2 (the same error).
Watch at this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hyhn6Z5252o

3. udevadm hangs on various computers.

This module udev-141-i486-62.1.tgz for zenwalk distro (Slackware-based) was converted to a lzm format.
I replace blacklist.conf in directory /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf of module udev-141-qt4.lzm on default blacklist.conf of slax remix v05. Probably, therefore, i have error with binding control socket ("/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf") in slax remix v05.

fanthom,

i find your message in the topic:

@beny
a) this is from remix-v05 initial post:
UGLY HACKS
1) 001-core - 'mount' binary is used from older util-linux-ng 2.14.1 package to avoid annoying lag during boot time (newer mount binaries tries to mount empty CD/DVD five times! - anyone know how to change it?)

that's the way i sorted it in remix

b) 'X -configure' is my biggest problem now (without it slax's 'xconf' wont work!), Seems that there's bug in slackware xorg-server package as this command works fine on gentoo and arch. Need to solve it asap.

@Blaze89
a) zenwalk packages might be different form slackware one (i have never seen this COLDPLUG message on slax). I wouldn't go with mixing packages between distros as it may couse troubles - as it happened in your case. If you are convinced to try this udev package from zenwalk repo, please remove all files from original udev in 001-core first.
b) check cheater1024 response just below my post (just apply this extra patch).

fanthom

@bonapart
i have tried your tool and works fine :) just one thing - Activate option is not very functional, jayfloods versions first asks users for path to folder where they keeps all modules and saves it in config file. After that, you can type first few letters of module name and it's activated.

Second thing: in v06 i'll be switching to 'full sq system' which gonna break your application. Fixing will be very easy anyway - just changing few paths to squashfs tools. Also i'll raise block size to 256K - remix modules will have same/similar size as slax-6x line.

You can check my 'sq4 patch' even now - all changes are made there already:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/ozydn5xmoy3/009-full-sq4-system-patch.sq4.lzm

@crashman
thanks!
unfortunately those language packages comes from slax-6.1.2 and are little bit out of date (slackware-12.2). Some apps in slax-remix like Midnight Commander are in newer versions, and are not fully translated anymore. it's too much work for me to provide updated packages for all languages, so it's up to you to do it or not.
crashman - maybe you could do it for polish users?

open konsole and run all this commands:
rm /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g
touch /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g
chmod +x /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g
echo '#!/bin/bash' > /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g
echo '/bin/ntfs-3g $1 "$2" -o locale=sv_SE.UTF-8' >> /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g

after reboot your ntfs partitions will be automounted with swedish language support.

Last thing is to switch whole system to swedish UTF-8 encoding.
open /etc/profile.d/lang.sh file with any editor (mcedit, kwrite) and comment out (add # to begining of line) two strings:
'LC_ALL=C' and 'export LANG=en_US'
uncomment 'export LANG=en_US.UTF-8' and change it to 'export LANG=sv_SE.UTF-8'

Download two packages:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/dg5jzgzamqf/glibc-i18n-2.11.1-i486.sq4.lzm
ftp://ftp.slax.org/SLAX-6.x/multi-language/6.1.2/swedish/slax/base/swedish.lzm
press right mouse click on second one and choose 'Convert sq3 to sq4' (all remix packages must be converted to sq4 before use) after completion place both packages in /slax/modules folder and reboot whole system.

Which look very much like scheduler problem... It is beyond my skills to debug further but i managed to find a workaround by adding following line in rc.local :
---
/bin/rm -rf /var/tmp/kde*
---

So system now boots OK with persistent changes. I am not aware of implications of clearing this kde cache...

However i still occasionally get scheduler errors (on various applications) during high system load and kernel seems quite unstable... I needed latest kernel to support some hardware that is buggy in stock slax kernel (like Nokia USB phone/modem) so i decided to try slax remix... I don't suppose you can release slax remix without 'Zen enhancements' to the kernel (which is kind of experimental) ?

first of all - i have seen similar issue before, we called it 'blinking hearts' and it was caused by conflicting modules:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=55706&anchorid=55799#postid55799

if it's really a scheduler problem than you can try to reproduce error in several ways:

1) under slax-6.1.2

2) under slax-remix or slax-6.1.2 with different kernel:

a) Quax kernel with backported squaqshfs3.4 (all modules should be in sq3 format):
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=57954

b) under Zen kernel with CFS scheduler and CFQ I/O scheduler instead of BFS and Simple I/O schedulers compiled manually:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=53917

c) under official 2.6.32 kernel patched witch sq4lzma and aufs2 (without Zen stuff in this case) compiled manually:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=58129&anchorid=58210#postid58210

i'm very curious if you'll be able to recreate error in any of those cases. Please let me know what will you find. Maybe i'll go back to less experimental schedulers in v06 but i need to be 100% sure that it was the real reason!

good luck!

i need to second bonapart - remove dmesg part from your post or move it to pastebin.com, please. This thread is too messy to keep such a long posts here.

Now - everything looks ok in your asus laptop, plaese try to set the gateway manually:
route add default gw 192.168.0.1 eth0
show me output of 'route' command and try to ping it again.

I will attempt to try all kernel scenarios you described but this will take some time so I will report on it next week. In the meantime i discovered that 007-firefox module might be loaded twice (and I can see it loaded twice on the boot screens) for reason I don't understand as I have it only once in base:

LIVECD: /mnt/sdb1/slax/base/007-firefox+flash.sq4.lzm
LIVECD: memory/base/007-firefox+flash.sq4.lzm

I can reproduce errors (including blinking hearts) so can you give me set of logfiles you want me to capture after each scenario ?

@ivank
no problem - take your time :)

does this 'blinking hearts' issue appear when you run 'plain' slax-remix - basic 7 modules only? Do you have one slax installation or more? is there a chance that slax-remix boots from usb and then loads some other slax modules from for example hard drive (linuxrc is searching for livecd.sgn file and boots form first one which is found)?

please boot slax-remix and paste here an output of this command:
ls -l /mnt/live/memory/images/ | awk '{print $9}'

in case of error please provide 2 logs
/var/log/dmesg
/var/log/messages

by using pastebin.com website.

Thanks

Hi,

I've tried the Slax remix v5 and extracted it (frugally) to the HDD where I used to have Slax 6.1.2. It's on the second partition of my HDD, on the first one I have xPUD and Grub. But the new Slax starts only once, the second time it freezes when it comes to the desktop splash image - at the "loading desktop" stage. Here is the entry for Slax in my menu.lst which doesn't work, while with 6.1.2 everything did work.

title Slax
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz ramdisk_size=6666 root=/dev/ram0 rw autoexec=xconf;telinit~4 changes=/mnt/sda2/slax
initrd /boot/initrd.lz (changed from initrd.gz in Slax 6.1.2)
boot

Any ideas?

hi Cyril
your issue is very similar to this one which is facing ivank. He also couldn't boot for the second time. i think it might be related to the changes cheatcode. What fs do you use? Could you repeat frugal installation and this time use slaxsave.dat for storing changes? Everything is described in following thread:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=38664

or you can use existing images created by Tomas which are placed in /slax/slaxsave.zip archive
remember to replace "changes=/mnt/sda2/slax" to "changes=/dev/sda2/slax/slaxsave.dat" (or any other place where you put slaxsave.dat file) in GRUB config.
Please report back success/fail.

I've solved a lot of strange issues with differents versions (or emplacement) of slax
by changing the name of slax folder and
modifying the initrd accordingly (LIVECDNAME=) althought the fs used
ie usb612 or usbrx5

the changes cheatcode in slax.cfg is also modified

@Cyril
sorry i have just tried it myself and it's not gonna work:
remember to replace "changes=/mnt/sda2/slax" to "changes=/dev/sda2/slax/slaxsave.dat"

please use 'from=' cheatcode as sugested by beny (faster boot time), unpack slaxsave.dat to your /slax folder and then simply add 'changes=/slax/slaxsave.dat' to menu.lst. Tested with lilo and works like a charm!

@bour59
great idea! i will just tweak linuxrc to search for slax-remix.sgn and at least few problems should be gone :)

Not a bug, but a minor issue for me -- when I type into this reply form, using the 3.6 Firefox that came with V5, the text appears in a weak blue color, not the regular black that I'd prefer. Same when I do an about:config or similar.

Where is this set? Can I change something to make it black?

TIA for any help. Working with 71-year-old eyes here, need more contrast.

+++++++++++++

As it appears to me, it's something in Slax. Not saving changes at all in the early stage of configurations.

For example, I have a slack13 install with FF363 that I got directly from Mozilla -- the same texts I mention above appear in black. So, running slax-remix ... I cd to the slack install/usr/lib/firefox [3.6.3] .... and run that distro's newer FF by clicking on the firefox executable, and I still get the weak blue color. Same hardware, running an nvidia module that I compiled on that distro. Definitely black when running slack13.

There are other things I'd like to change in Firefox's presentation, was hoping someone here had the master key.

Edit: just rebooted into my slax612 frugal on the same machine, which is still running the stock FF353 -- and the texts are the black that I expect -- so I'm thinking it's something in slax-remix that is doing this. I'll experiment with it some more, but it would be useful to know if I'm the only user seeing this.

++++++++++++

Ahh.. you must be speaking of the nvidia driver; I'm using the 196 version, got it from that page. And fwiw, I first tried compiling a NV*tar.gz I had onhand here, but it failed for some reason I don't recall.

Maybe I'll try disabling it, see if that has any effect.

Edit: renamed my /slax/modules to hide all my additions, rebooted vanilla system***, and the problem is still there with Firefox. I also compiled my own 196.36.08 from source I had on hand, ran xconf;startx, and that made no difference at all.

I've seen this before in Slax from Tomas, in some of the 6-rcN versions. But the effect is NOT there in released 6.1.2.

*** and now I recall the reason it didn't compile the first time was I didn't have the 006-devel-remix-v05.sq4.lzm module yet. And that added devel module is [at this moment] the only piece not in the v05.iso.

And while I'm here I'll mention another peculiarity about which I'm clueless; some Desktop links aren't getting saved [or maybe not reproduced?]. This is like where I use the mouse to drag an item from the K menu to the desktop; say for example, KSnapshot. After which, I do a dir2lzm of /mnt/live/memory/changes, save to /modules, then use right-click on that to convert it to sq4 -- reboot the distro, and the KSnapshot link is not restored. This =may= have something to do with changing the wallpaper to a .jpg of my own -- seems like some links that I made before that change are restored, but perhaps none after.

+++++++++++++

Sorry, no, don't have VBox here. But I wouldn't run it that way on a usual basis anyway.

As for the desktop links failing, I'm still thrashing around with that problem. I'm thinking it may have to do with converting old modules??? What I mostly have been using is the convert available by right-clicking on an sq3 module.

But, for example, today I tried to run Thunderbird [2.0.0.17.lzm from modules] --one of those whose desktop link disappears; it's still in the KDE menu structure, but KDE reports no executable exists. So I go to find it in /usr/lib/thunderbird-2.0.0.17, run ./thunderbird, and it starts and runs fine. But there's no link or executable in /usr/bin for it. Same module works fine in slax612.

OTOH, /usr/bin/ksnapshot does exist, and can be started from the K menu. I can drag its icon to the desktop, choose make link to application. I can then see in /mnt/live/memory/changes/root/Desktop that the link was created. Then I save changes to a module, put it in /modules and reboot -- and it's gone from the desktop.

burninbush

reply
I may have stumbled onto a clue or two about my added modules problems. Appears to have solved my disappearing desktop links issue.

I have been using the right-click convert lzm from sq3 to sq4 to make old modules work on slax-remix. Practice is to just add modules that I want to the frugal install's /slax/modules, and then right-click on one [or a selected group] to do the conversion. I then observe that the underlying script has created a subdir in /modules -- no doubt to extract and then re-squash. But for many users, me for certain, that /modules directory is on a vfat filesystem -- is this a potential source of problems? Thinking of links and permissions.

So, once I got that idea I've had better luck; I've been doing some setups and then from a shell running the new mksquashfs tool [under /root] to directly create my new .lzms, i.e., rather than use dir2lzm and then right-click conversion.

FWIW, if you just run 'mksquashfs' from some random location you get the one in /usr/bin which is different than the one in /root/squashfs4-tools. I suggest a name change for the new version -- add a '4' to it??

fanthom

@burninbush
for sure it was the reason of missing symlinks :) i always do the conversion in aufs (RAM) cause it's simply faster. Never thought about consequences of doing it on FAT filesystem. Will add proper warning to the remix FAQ - thanks.

in remix-v06 i'll be switching to 'full sq4 system' and both sq3 and sq4 tools will be placed in /usr/bin directory with different names. You can try my patch even now if you want, here's all needed info:

any progress with 'weak blue text' issue? >fanthom

++++++++++++++

No ... I'm nearly convinced now that it's something in KDE, not Firefox. I can live with it until I locate the source.

Meantime, I'll re-squash all those old modules in a linux filesystem. Several of what I added are like KDEAddons.3510.tgz, previously converted with tgz2lzm ... and then I did the sq4 conversion of all of those on a vfat disk.

But you should realize, 99% of slax frugal installs are on vfat disks or vfat usbsticks.

yes, i know that. there's nothing wrong with keeping slax modules on FAT partition, just extracting them on MS fs is a great way to produce broken packages (missing symlinks and 777 permisions). FAQ updated to reflect that.

are you booting from CD or usb? could you try to boot slax-6.1.2 and report if it's ok? i think it may be related to those hd's in raid0. did you try to run any other linux on this PC? are those drives visible as 1 hd?

if booting of slax-6.1.2 (or any other linux) will be successful, please provide following log files:
/var/log/dmesg, /var/log/messages and list of kernel modules used:
lsmod >> modules.txt

use pastebin.com

please answer all those questions and maybe i'll be able to help :)

it doesnt rely on slax-6.1.2 repo anymore. It's even more powerful now:

268 for non UTF8

languages:
kde-i18n: 71
koffice-l10n: 39
k3b: 54
system: 125
man pages: 28

i have tried to generate localization package for polish UTF8 and polish non UTF8 and it worked! Both 5,5 MB only :)
i didn't try some exotic settings like:
uz_UZ@cyrillic, sr_RS@latin, ko_KR.euckr, eu_ES@euro
please try LST script and report success/fail :)

Hi Fanthom,

I couldn't go to bed without 1st giving your language selection tool a good try!

There was no time to try both the ISO and UTF8 standards so i chose UTF8 out
of curiosity. Almost everything seems OKay but my FAT32 partitions. in any case,
this represents a significant effort and i'm sure it will help lots of people.

The one thing which remains to be addressed is the Keyboard Layout, here's
what i got:

/root/.kde/share/config/kxkbrc
------------------------------
[Layout]
EnableXkbOptions=true
LayoutList=fr,us
Use=true
------------------------------

That's the French European AZERTY keayboard layout, no surprize there... Now,
here's what it could have been like:

/root/.kde/share/config/kxkbrc
------------------------------
[Layout]
DisplayNames=ca(fr):cf
EnableXkbOptions=true
IncludeGroups=ca(fr):us
LayoutList=ca(fr),us(euro)
Use=true
------------------------------

It's the proper North-American French-Canadian QWERTY keyboard layout i need.

I believe this can possibly be handled using a 2nd-Pass script, for example the
"fr_CA" part in "fr_CA.utf8" would allow the script to make suitable substitutions
in the 'kxkbrc' configuration file contained in the 'locales-xx_XX' module which
was generated by the 1st-Pass script...

;-)

One last thing... I find it confusing when i read this prompt:

« Is your language on the list? Do you want to add it? Answer y/n »

I'd answer YES to the « Is your language on the list? » part of the question and
then NO to the « Do you want to add it? » part since the "fr" language is already
present in the list!... I'll guess that if you replace « Do you want to add it? » by
« Do you want to use it? » ("add" becomes "use") then this should take care of the
ambiguity. An other approach would be to fuse both questions as one, as in:

« Do you want to use a language present in this list? »

...

@Bicephale

1) you can mount your fat32 partitions by hand:
mount -t vfat /dev/smthg /mnt/smthg -o iocharset=utf8
iso encoding works as well,
i'm trying to do auto mount similar to ntfs-3g but seems it's not that easy (help welcome).

2) kxkbrc should be easier to implement (just need some time)

3) yes - now i see it's confusing (thats my english fault). will change it to « Is your language on the list? » « Do you want to include it in final package compilation? » Also i'll add a warning in 'welcome message' about answering once to all questions.
any other language mistakes/confusions?

thanks for testing my tool :)

i need to say that i'm really happy with it now :)
please let me know about any bugs/suggestions. i'll will try to add more info to the symbols so it should be easier to locate your country.

Now the harder part - will try to port LST to slax-6.1.2 (need to recreate language files removed by Tomas).

I'm sorry about the bad news but so far the result is the same,
please take note that i hadn't seen your last post when doing so:
the keyboard is still French-European, e.g. country = "France".

I was surprized not to find the "ISO8859-1" FAT option so i chose
"CP863" which is what i used under pure DOS... I don't remember
exactly what Code-Page it was under Windows 98, maybe CP1250
or CP1251, i'm not sure. The filenames/directories on my FAT32
partitions are displayed correctly but the NTFS ones are gone...

When the script asked for my keyboard layout there was no "cf"
(Canadian-French) option, not even "QWERTY" in opposition to
the european "AZERTY" alternative... So, i chose "basic" and it
lead to "France (basic)".

Perhaps a simpler approach would go like this: make it a 2-pass
process where the module is installed and the X/KDE session is
restarted to provide the user an opportunity to make his own
keyboard layout selection. Once done, he'd launch part two of
the script to save '/root/.kde/share/config/kxkbrc' inside the
final module...

@Bicephale
nice catches :)

1) ISO8859-1 and cp437 for FAT will appear in remix-v06 (will compile them as (M))
2) Keyboard layout can be fixed asap. Your suggestion can work, but i'll try to add question about 'keybord layout' first (you suppose to chose 'ca') and second one about 'layout variant' (here you can choose 'fr').

Thanks

reply
When 'Slax' used to end booting with a UserName/PassWord prompt
(v5) on the console line (no KDE) i could type "loadkeys cf" and get the
correct keyboard layout. That is why i'd refer to "cf" somewhere.

Now that KDE is loaded automatically and 'Slax' has reached version
6 it seems adjusting the keyboard layout using the bottom-right tool
sort of "propagates" the settings to console windows as well. The
code is displayed on two lines (Quebec is bilingual):

setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout ca,us -variant ,fr
setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout us -variant euro

Now if i look into the '/root/.kde/share/config/kxkbrc' setup file
itself this is what i get:

[Layout]
DisplayNames=
EnableXkbOptions=true
IncludeGroups=ca(fr):us
LayoutList=ca(fr),us(euro)
Model=pc104
Options=
ResetOldOptions=false
ShowFlag=true
ShowSingle=false
StickySwitching=false
StickySwitchingDepth=2
SwitchMode=Global
Use=true

I'll bet that's essentially what i've shown you before, less a couple
lines which were added automatically by the system...

I can change "DisplayNames" to "ca(fr):cf" if i like but that doesn't
seem to do much other than just display a flag with the "cf" letters
on it instead of "ca"...

Speaking of that, you should know that there are two French keyboard
layouts used in Canada. In Quebec we mostly use the one which would
correspond to "cf" while the federal people who are often working in
an English environment may be using the ACNOR model (which i hate)!

That is another good reason for the two-pass idea: there are so many
variants when dealing with language and keyboard layouts it might be
easier just to let the user adjust that part himself...

French is spoken in many countries, the KDE-i18n module defaults to
the AZERTY layout for France in europe as if it were the only country
with french-speaking people - which is not the case, obviously!!! I'm
sure this also happens to be true of other languages as well, making
the task of managing all of those "exceptions" monumental!...

I didn't expect such an outcome but now get prepared for some good
news!!! Everything works as intended if i pick UTF8 when prompted
at the begining of the script: all of my accented/special characters will
be displayed correctly in a console window/'KWrite' and they equally
look fine while browsing throughout my NTFS/FAT32 partitions. I was
about to suggest that you should separate the FAT32 & NTFS parts of
the script but it seems fine just the way it is when selecting the UTF8
encoding format!...

8-D

One word of caution to the users though: contrary to what i thought,
the letters on the flag do affect the character set in a KDE program
like 'KWrite' so that means one can't replace "ca" with "cf", etc.

;-)

At this time i'd strongly suggest you to request feedback from people
facing similar situations relatively to the keyboard layout and Greek was
also difficult to solve, as i recall... I bet they may also confirm success,
which would tend to prove this design is sound.

:)

In any case, congratulations! A big leap was made today as i wasn't
hoping to see a solution before the summer's end, relatively to UTF8
which never worked completely for me until now...

8-)

when i click right mouse button on the cairo-compmgr icon in the tray i cant go to the 'Properties' menu. it just doesnt work. any additional lib is required for it?

zen-team is less active nowadays. still waiting for bumping to newer kernel version, also waiting on AMD and their fglrx with official xorg-server-1.7x support. When those requirements are meet - i'll be releasing remix-v06 :)

I think it sucks !

LOL
Just jokin fathom:)

I just downloaded it first time today, and it works great!
at least everything I've done so far.

This is kinda long post so please fathom dont forget these questions-

1) are all the pkgs 13/current or 12.2/slax?

2) whats the compatibility with slackpkg/pkgtool and slacks pkgs such as KDE?

OK, now to this-

Now, errr...dont know your recommends on this or if you(or slax)
has a hdd installer for remix5, but I installed it to my hard drive too.

Here's what I did

downloaded iso and copied to usb

booted off usb no copy2ram, fresh mode

Did fdisk -l to identify my partitions and hdd, which is sda; partition sda7

formatted existing partition of 7GB

mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda7

made a mount point for install and mounted sda7

mkdir /target
mount /dev/sda7 /target

Then I just copied all pertinet folders to /target partition

cp -R --preserve /bin /target
cp -R --preserve /boot /target
cp -R --preserve /dev /target
cp -R --preserve /etc /target
cp -R --preserve /home /target
cp -R --preserve /lib /target
cp -R --preserve /opt /target
cp -R --preserve /root /target
cp -R --preserve /sbin /target
cp -R --preserve /srv /target
cp -R --preserve /usr /target
cp -R --preserve /var /target

Made the additional needed empty folders

mkdir -p /target/media
mkdir -p /target/mnt
mkdir -p /target/proc
mkdir -p /target/sys
mkdir -p /target/tmp

Create a /etc/mtab and /etc/fstab files for new install

Use nano, vi or leafpad, for sda7 like this

/etc/fstab (dont know if the aufs one is needed, probably not?

aufs / aufs defaults 0 0 # AutoUpdate
/dev/sda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda7 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,owner,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
none /mnt/slaxdrive slaxdrive defaults 0 0 # This is for Slax Drive integration into KDE

and /etc/mtab

/dev/root / ext3 rw,errors=continue,data=ordered 0 0
/proc /proc proc rw 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs rw 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs rw 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs rw 0 0

and now must make a /etc/lilo.conf to boot
there should already be one in /etc or now in /target/etc

Look at the top part and comment or uncomment whether you want Lilo
installed to root of sda7 or to MBR.
It is set there to install Lilo to MBR
If dual booting with Windows see any info you need thru Google or here at LQ!
If you have Ubuntu or similar installed somewhere, just install Lilo to root of partition and then boot into
your buntu setup and issue "update-grub" and buntu should setup
the grub.cfg
You dont need a initrd with this kernel if using ext2/ext3 partition,etc

Open it with Leafpad and it should look similar to this-

# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'
#
# Start LILO global section
# boot = /dev/sda # Installs Lilo to MBR
boot = /dev/sda7 # Installs Lilo to root of partition
#compact # faster, but won't work on all systems.
# Append any additional kernel parameters:
append=" vt.default_utf8=0 autoexec=telinit~4"
prompt
timeout = 50
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
# vga = 773
# Normal VGA console
# vga = normal
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x64k
# vga=791
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x32k
# vga=790
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
# vga=773
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x64k

# vga=785
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x32k
# vga=784
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x256
# vga=769
# ramdisk = 0 # paranoia setting
# End LILO global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz
root = /dev/sda7
label = ZenRemix5
read-only # Partitions should be mounted read-only for checking
# Linux bootable partition config ends

heres the full grub2 entry so far
menuentry "Zen13 (on /dev/hda7)" {
insmod ext2
set root='(/dev/hda,7)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 42f24b82-e53b-4ba4-9dd3-c7c7b0ef07ad
linux /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda7 ro vt.default_utf8=0 vga=788 autoexec=telinit~4
}

Now chroot into partition and install Lilo to MBR or root of partition

mount --bind /dev/ /target/dev
mount -t proc none /target/proc
mount -t sysfs none /target/sys
mount -t devpts none /target/dev/pts

export HOME=/root
export LC_ALL=C

chroot /target

/sbin/lilo

Now, exit from chroot, unmount everything and reboot.
back at terminal enter

exit
umount -l -f /target/proc
umount -l -f /target/sys
umount /target/dev/pts
umount /target/dev
umount /target

and once I rebooted and did update-grub from my Debian install, which controls sda with grub2
I rebooted into my shiny new
KDE ZenRemix5 install!

EDIT: Note that on first bootup after install, make sure your kernel append line for grub/grub2
says "autoexec=xconf;telinit~4" without quotes
after x gets configured, change your grub,lilo etc to
autoexec=telinit~4

Thats where I'm writing this from so it works just great dude!

The install size is at
root@slax:~# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/root 6.6G 874M 5.4G 14% /
tmpfs 378M 0 378M 0% /dev/shm

so thats awesome!

Heres "free" with alot of stuff open incl firefox

root@slax:~# free
total used free shared buffers cached

-/+ buffers/cache: 135880 637796
Swap: 2273156 0 2273156

wow, thats pretty good!

And so please answer my first questions too fathom
and good work!

thanks for this detailed HOWTO. Anyway: if you dont want to go with frugall install i would recommend Slackware instead of Slax.
001-core, 002-xorg and 006-devel are based on slackware-current. i didnt touch 003, 004,and 005 (no point as there are no new version of those packages) except adding Beep Media Player, recompiling Mplayer etc.

@anders
sorry - this script would be too dangerous for 'fresh users'. Nobody wants to finish with cleared MBR and unbootable PC - isn't it? I can consider creating something based on Grub4dos but not now, i'm too busy with sns-tool and LST scripts. Maybe after releasing remix-v06 but cant promise!

hi cichlasoma,

good to see you again on this forum :)
I didn't get this error on v05. i'm just uploading newer version (316) of Vbox, should be done in 30 min so please try again with new module.
What are those other issues?

Regards,
fanthom

EDIT:\\
are you using PAE version or normal?
Mediafire works crappy today (or maybe it's my internet) it's gonna take longer than 30 min ;/

fanthom: Hi!
Thank you very much for your nice greeting and for the new modul, I'll definitely try and report :)
As for the other issues - I boot successfully only sometimes. Sometimes, I get an error message at the login-screen (I don't boot into graphical mode.) Last time, the message was: "/sbin/idconfig: /usr/lib/libaudio.so.2 is not a symbolic link", I'm not sure whether it was exactly the same in previous cases. Nevertheless, It usually is possible to login.
One time, I got "(none) login:" instead of "slax login:", I tried to login, it was not possible and as I typed my password, the characters were displayed normally (which doesn't happen normally).
A minor issue is that I am not able to connect wifis (I tried 3 different) with Kwifimanager, but it is possible to do so from commandline (although not at the first attempt, usually).
Anyway, thank you for your work which attracts me back to Slax once again! :)

@cichlasoma
"/sbin/idconfig: /usr/lib/libaudio.so.2 is not a symbolic link" this library doesn't exist in plain remix-v05 so it must be something with your other modules.
"(none) login:" - strange one :)
possible solution for Kwifimanager (credits goes to abhi):
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=56687

please try remix without changes and all problems should be gone - i believe.

So, with the "original remix" with no modules except virtualbox, I boot withou problems and get no error message when starting virtualbox. I'm still not abble to boot my virtual Windows, but I guess, it's not a Slax issue.

@cichlasoma
1) conversion from slax-612 works fine but some modules might be compiled against older versions of libs which are not present in remix. in this case you should use latest version of programs possible.
2) aufs will handle up to 1024 modules.

BTW. please try to edit posts instead of posting new ones - remix threads are usually messy enough (which is good but causes troubles in finding useful info)

short answer: replace /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g symlink with a bash script as it's described in FAQ answer 14 (generally it's good idea to read whole initial post before you start with remix).
long answer: try Language-Selection-Tool:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/j2zmnlqyqnd/language-selection-tool.sq4.lzm
you will need 'full sq4 system patch' to use it:

fanthom: I thank you again and you apologize again. (I wanted to have remix running as soon as possible in order to create virtualized Windows environment, which I made, BTW, and am very happy with it. :-) )
Two questions more:
- How makes one Slax run with support for czech (in my case) characters, but with menus of all applications in english?
- Isn't there a list od 6.12 modules which run on zen remix somewhere? (Vaguely speaking - how many are they? - I got error message for almost every one I tried.)

1) i'm afraid it's not easy to do (if possible at all) you'll have to set language for each application separately
2) nope - as far as i know (make sure that you convert it to sq4 before use!)
3) this might be not possible, as i'll be releasing v06 without zen stuff (waiting too long for new kernel from them), maybe in v07 i'll be back with zen kernel - will see.

__________________________________________________

i have remix-next nearly ready, this is changelog for it:
new kernel - 2.6.33.2

kernel config:
- all zen stuff is gone
- 'CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED=' is set to 'n' which allows to bump udev to ver 151
- KMS enabled by default on Intel i915 driver (xf86-video-intel-2.11.0 needs it anyway)
- removed experimental opensource ralink rt20xx driver
- added bootsplash

Boot folder
- cmdline in slax.cfg is fixed (credits: jlmcp, ahz), new colour scheme by Bicephale.
- PXE-boot should be working now: updated /boot/pxelinux.cfg/default and fixed permissions on /slax directory
- livecd.sgn is replaced by slax-remix-$ver.sgn - linuxrc modified accordingly (thanks to bour59 for suggestion)
- added nice bootsplash theme :) Sorry for this gentoo logo - is anybody able to remove it in Gimp or replace with slax logo?

001-core with merged 008-extra-stuff:
- bumped all packages to slackware-current: 20th of April (except of mc which is converted from zenwalk repo)
- added lynx text mode webbrowser - usefull in case of troubles with xorg
- added 'splash' utility
- added radeon firmware package
- removed device-mapper package - it's now included in lvm2
- added 'slax' to /etc/hosts file (credits: HughJohnson)
- switched to 'full sq4 system'
- squashfs4-tools updated to latest version from cvs (prev version could give segfault during conversion of many modules at the same time
- mloop updated (jayflood)
- introduced language-selection tool
- sns-tool bumped to the latest version: added support for WPA2, hidden essids, ad-hoc mode, custom MAC addresses (many thanks to Bill Gayds for suggestions and help)
- added ndiswrapper (crashman)

002-xorg
- bumped all packages to slackware-current: 20th of April (xorg-server-1.7.5!)
- xf86-video-ati-6.13.0 and xf86-video-intel-2.11.0 are ported from zenwalk repo
- xconf - added workaround for nv driver bug (Bill-Gayds)

006-devel
- bumped all packages to slackware-current: 20th of April
- checkinstall replaced by bpkg
- all files from '/usr/src/linux/include/generated' copied to '/usr/src/linux/include/linux' to allow some older app compile without error (dazuko)
- moved here all *.a files from other modules

007-firefox
- firefox updated to 3.6.3

i'll upload it today and would like to ask intel users for testing new xf86-video-intel-2.11.0 driver which is ported from zenwalk repo. (i have tested ati myself and it works great with compiz with and without KMS).

Few very important changes:
- full sq4 system (txz2lzm sns-tool etc will produce sq4 packages winth 256K blocksize)
- linuxrc is hardcoded to look for slax-remix-v06.sgn file - be aware of it when using lilo or grub.
- merged sq4lzma+aufs2+bootsplash manually so no ZEN stuff here
- added bootsplash theme to initrd.lz - active with 'Slax Graphics mode (KDE)' by default. please help with removing gentoo logo from it.
- you wont get 006-devel now, wait for official v06 release
- squashfs4-tools are removed from /root directory

once uploaded, i'll post download link here.

Please report any issues with it immediately as no much time left for releasing remix-v06

fanthom

@cichlasoma
1) i wouldn't dare to call it 'fanthom's remix' as all slax community effort is embedded here. BTW: Do we really need to change 'slax-remix' name?
2) yes you should be able to move modules safely between releases (except kernel dependent one like: GPU drivers, VBox, ndiswrapper, etc. - basically - you cant use modules from "Download Section")

@andre5775

remix-next is something like 'release-candidate' so everything can be changed here (including kernel version). No point for releasing 006-devel as official remix-v06 should be uploaded in 2-3 days (depending on AMD and their long awaited fglrx-10.4 driver). If you can't work with remix-next - please stick with remix-v05 for a while.

Hi Blaze,

M'well... I find there's too much white in that version
while there are so many colour tones to choose from
but the criteria which led me to spend 8+ hours just
to learn how to "tweak" these was the [Tab] CLI edit
feature, after all... If that part works for you then it's
all you should care about! As far as i'm concerned my
favourite pictures are those with an easier layout, like
the green field or night sky with a full moon but those
preferences are esthetic rather than functional. So, is
the colour of your [Tab] CLI edit feature convenient?

I mean, it's not as critical as the WallPaper which stays
on for hours... All i ask of the boot menu is that i can
read it, then i'm glad if it's also nice to look at.

;-)

Congratulations for your KDE Splash contribution in
any case!!!

Hi,
Just to report.
I got a kingston dtcrc combined 4gb USB-memory stick and micro-card reader with the intention of putting slax on the stick and data on the card. (the drive and card go as sdb and sdc). Nice little thing, good idea I thought.
Very disappointed was I when I discovered a kernel recompile would be necessary for this to work due to scsi lun support.
Very happy was I to discover slax remixed 5 works fine for this purpose.
I did have to install it onto an ext2 partition on the stick(using extlinux), as the fat32 changes posix overlay wotsit was not happy for long. Actually a few things were not very happy but they are fine since I switched to ext2. Sorry, but needed a working stick more than I needed to play with linux so not a lot of debug info to give. I am looking forward to customizing it later (already have ranish and smartbootmanager images added to the boot menu...!!)
While I remember, I had to redo the boot menu as the one shipped would not work with extlinux at all. No biggie. Chance to get creative.
I have converted all the modules I would normally use with slax (about 15 in total methinks) and they all work as before.
Anyway, this is me saying hi, and thank you very much all.
:)

as you can see menu positions are not visible in Gimp and every other GTK application, they shows up when i move mouse cursor over menu field but it's rather annoying thing. this error doesn't exist in VBox (different graphic driver i guess) and with different GTK themes. Do you also have it on intel and nvidia cards? If yes i'll have to change default GTK slax theme in v06.

ok i have a nice replacement:
http://jp.bizet.free.fr/themes/gtk2.html

theme is called Neutrino.

@bonapart
nice:) few suggestions/bug reports

modtools:
1) log window never disappears after 5 seconds
2) could you do that after selection of module/package, name for new module will be suggested automatically (basically - same name, different extension)?
3) conversion from tgz/txz makes sq3 modules, can it be sq4 for slax-remix? (to avoid double conversion)

pacman didnt work for me:
1) default folder is /mnt/sdc/slax (dont have it here)
2) pacman downloads package: http://team16.ru/slax.tar.gz, unpacks it (dont know where) and nothing happens.

As i said before: looks very promising, please keep working on it :)

@Blaze
will check it - thanks :)

It download to /root/.pacman , and unpack to /root/.pacman/cache
Try to run ones more(it shouldn't download cache)
If second run doesn't work unpack manual or download cache module from jayflood thread

No, it does not work. (This time, I have no 008 module, I just booted slax contained in the folder Joliet level 3.) There were lots of problems with cards rt 2860 in EEEPCs, in linux, I connect with Windows driver via ndiswrapper. As far as I remember, as I struggled with it in Puppy linux, I got to the conclusion somehow that there seem to be differences between different pieces of rt2860 undocumeted in official specification and due to that fact, linux drivers work only for some of them. (I'm not sure about that, nevertheless...)

With vO5, I usually manage to connect from commandline, but connection is lost after some ten seconds. I'll have to experiment with v06 to see whether it's usable. When I tried it first time, several attempts from commandline and with the help of sns were unsuccessful. it should download to optional folder

future changes:

just wanted to be sure that your firmware is loaded and seems that it is. Debug info comes from dhcpd and wpa_supplicant when they tries to associate with AP and obtain IP address after editing configuration files with MC.

@bonapart
great plans!
1) Just one thing: i have asked everybody to not load sq4 modules on slax site and seems that people follow this rule - i'm very happy because of it :) searching for sq4 seems to be pointless right now (everything will change when slax-7 arrives - i believe). Converting to sq4 is a good idea. Since v06 all remixes will have that name in /etc/slax-version file so you can recognize it by 'Slax-Remix' string.

2) Asking Tomas is a good idea, in worst scenario he will say just 'NO' :)
3) 'tar xfz ndiswrapper-1.56.tar.gz -C /tmp/.test/' works for me. In case of troubles just move * from /root/.pacman/slax/ to /root/.pacman/cache

fanthom

@ fanthom

You already provided a convenient tool with gui to convert sq3 module to sq4 , but woul it be possible to automatically add a sq4 to the end of the file name ?
For eg

my_programme.lzm after converting becomes my_programme_sq4.lzm

This help differentiate the sq4 module (for users who are using both sq3 and sq4).

@jcsoh
to convert you can use 4 techniques
1) mksquashfs mksquashfs3 unsquashfs3 unsqushfs(console,you will select name)
2) right click in konqueror(name doesn't change)
3) jayflood script(name changes automatcly,a big work,because of single selection)
4) my modtool qt(name doesn't change,faster and informative,multiple selection)

first 3 was in slax-remix 05 by default
also wait next release,it will be soon =)

@fanthom
downloading module(s) work or not?

jcsoh
wrote 4 years ago

reply
It is a feature request (I hope it not a too much of an imposition).
I am looking for merely clicking singly or in batches , but autoname with same original name after conversion but with _sq4 append to the end of the file name.
But it not a major item as I can probably make use of batch renaming tool like gwenrename or krename with "use original file name append preffix or suffix"

@bonapart
yes downloading works :) will your tool be ready today? i have everything done for v06 so just waiting on you. (fglrx users can stick for a while with opensource radeon driver which is good enough - IMO)

@jcsoh
yes - i have just fixed it yesterday :) so in v06 all tools: LST, sns-tool, konqueror, jayflood's modtools GUI and cli, hopefully bonapart one (if will be ready) will produce *.sq4.lzm for sq4 and *.lzm for sq3. In txz2lzm and tgz2lzm user needs to pick up the name so couldnt do much here.

Sorry for the mess - i wasn't sure how to handle those suffixes, but now all should be fine.

I have tried out your pre-release slax-remix-v06

a) does boot up, gets past the file-based instalisation failed message before,
b) says that it has found ext4 partitions and supposedly mounts them, only mounted /boot partition from a Fedora 12 installation :(,
Did not mount volume-group??? lvm partition that Fedora makes :(
c) no devel package, yes size 186MB, but devel package is a must have(at least for me), I cannot make slax remix connect to net(I have only dialup method to connect(#home))
d) you have updated many packages, why not update cdrecord too, cdrtools-a74 is in slackware, your remix like original slax has a53 version :(, Also you appear to have xorg - nv driver, whereas
newer nouveau is working fine, why not incorporate it?, I can test it, I have two or three machines with nvidia chipsets.
e) did not test more things, but apparently transparency, other little quirks are looking very good :)

19. Is there any package manager in Remix?
20. Fglrx driver for my Amd/Ati card doesnt work - what to do?
21. How to compile software from sources and make a good slax module?

- bleeding-edge users who are not afraid of using (not necessarily well tested) slackware-current software - bugs expected :)

2. How does it look? (v09 release)
http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/6486/remixv09.jpg

3. How to get it?
search Slax forum for the latest version:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php

4. How to check md5sum and why it's so important?
Md5sum is a hash unique for every file so if md5sum matches with one saved on the server in md5sums.txt file, then you can be 100% sure that your download was not corrupted. Please check it by running this command in the console:
md5sum your_file
In case of mismatch please try 'rsync' utility instead of your fauvorite dowloader:
rsync -avP ponce.cc::slax-remix/testing/slax-remix-v09-x86_64.iso .
be sure to include the final dot - it's part of the command.

5. How to play 1080p movies in Slax-Remix?
In remix-v08 Mplayer got vdpau, vaapi and multithread support. If you have vdpau capable GPU (recent nvidia cards), then you can play HD movies easily by passing following arguments to mplayer:
mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau /path_to_movie
if you have amd/ati HD series card or intel GMA/Clarkdale (i3,i5,i7) gpu/igp then command syntax needs to look like here:
mplayer -vo vaapi -va vaapi /path_to_movie
(you can also try vaapi feature with nvidia cards but generally vdpau does better job)
in case that your PC doesn't meet above requirements but still have multicore processor you can use multithread feature to play HD movies without glitches:
mplayer -lavdopts threads=2 /path_to_movie/

6. How to disable KMS on amd/ati, nvidia and intel GPU's?
Since v08 Kernel Mode Setting (high resolution in console mode) is enabled by default on all modern GPU's. If you wish to disable it, just add: 'radeon.modeset=0', 'nouveau.modeset=0' or 'i915.modeset=0' cheatcode to /boot/slax.cfg file.

7. Is there a 64bit version of slax-remix?
Yes - if your PC has support for executing 64bit instructions, then you can try x86_64 version - search Slax forum:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php
Be aware that 32bit CPU can't run 64bit applications. 64bit CPU can do it but very often needs additional 32bit libraries.

8. How to convert Slax-6x modules to the new squashfs4 format which is used in slax-remix?
Open konqueror, press right mouse click on sq3 (slax-6.1.2) module and choose proper conversion option.
screenshot: http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/1662/snapshot1k.jpg
You can also use jayfloods 'Module Tools' - CLI or GUI version or do it through bonaparts 'Slax Module Center'. Launch them from console or through KMenu - they are placed under Slax-Extra-Stuff submenu.
Be aware that slax-6.1.2 doesn't support new sq4 format and slax-remix doesn't support old sq3 format so conversion must be done in case of moving modules between those two releases.

9. How to create squashfs3 module used in Slax-6x?
Open konqueror, press right mouse click on sq4 (slax-remix) module and choose proper conversion option. To do it from CLI - use mksquashfs3 utility. Bonaparts 'Slax Module Center' also has this option.

10. How to get my wireless card to work?
Since remix-v06 all firmware which is needed by some wifi cards is included in 001-core module. Use sns-tool utility to setup your connection in an 'easy way'. Launch it from console by typing sns-tool or through KMenu - it's placed under Slax-Extra-Stuff submenu. In case of troubles with getting your wifi driver to work you can try 'ndiswrapper' utility which is provided with remix, more info:
http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=slackware:ndiswrapper

11. Any plans for switching to KDE-4x
Not for 32bit version. Reason is simple: i don't want to get 1000 reports that KDE-4 is working slowly on user PC.
x86_64 remix version has KDE-4 included by default as 64bit CPU'a are fast enough to handle it - well, maybe except atom's :)

12. How to change default bootsplash theme?
Put your theme in /etc/bootsplash directory and download plain 'initrd.lz' file from remix's 'Download section'. Run following command:
splash -s -f /etc/bootsplash/XXXX/bootsplash.conf >> initrd.lz
Make sure that your bootloader has following (or similar) parameters in the config file: 'vga=791 splash=silent quiet'
During boot time you can press F2 to switch to the verbose mode.

13. How to setup national language support in slax-remix?
Use Language-Selection-Tool. Launch it from console by typing language-selection-tool or through KMenu - it's placed under Slax-Extra-Stuff submenu

14. How to report a bug?
Try to recreate the bug first: boot slax-remix in 'always fresh mode' with basic slax-remix modules only. If you'll be able to recreate the error, post relevant bug report in remix thred. Please attach links to the screenshots and logfiles if possible (examples: /var/log/messages, /var/log/dmesg, /var/log/Xorg.0.log). For the log files please use external sites like pastebin.com and post web links only. Make sure that bug wasn't created by user mistake - save my free time! Thanks.

15. How to set LXDE as default desktop?
To boot LXDE with all options available through syslinux (always fresh, vesa, copy to ram, etc) you need to remove kde modules from /slax/base folder or add 'lxde' string to autoexec cheatcode, example: 'autoexec=lxde;xconf;telinit~4'
In this case you will be able to use KDE applications and still have lxde as default deskop.

16. Does Remix use extra cheatcodes - other than official Slax release?
Yes - you can find updated cheatcode list in /slax/cheatcodes.txt file. Some cheats were added, some changed and some removed - be aware of it.

17. Slax hangs during xorg/GUI initialization - how to fix it?
If you got this error on your PC then try to add 'vmalloc=256MB' cheatcode to /boot/slax.cfg file. If error still exist, please post bug report on slax forum in remix thread. You will have to follow advices from answer 14.

18. How to track missing package dependencies?
Use 'slackyd' tool to download missing libraries. Open terminal and type 'slackyd -u' to update package database, and then 'slackyd -d' to check and download missing dependencies.

19. Is there any package manager in Remix?
Yes - even more than one:
1) you can download lzm modules from Slax-6.1.2 repository through 'Slax Module Center'. You will need to convert them to sq4 format before use. Be aware that some modules might be outdated.
2) 'slackyd' is a command line tool which you can use to download latest .txz packages from slackware and slacky repos. They will need conversion to sq4.lzm format.
3) 'lzm_add', 'lzm_info' and 'lzm_search' tools provided by Falcony can be used to download lzm modules (already in sq4 format) from FIDOSlax repo. As per today there is more than 500 modules ready for download :)

20. Fglrx driver for my Amd/Ati card doesnt work - what to do?
Some users reported that fglrx driver from 'Download Section' doesn't work for them. If it's your case then you can use script provided in this post to compile unique driver for your card:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=70411

21. How to compile software from sources and create slax module?
First of all you should follow official Slax documentation which is placed here:
http://www.slax.org/documentation_create_modules_rules.php
(please do not upload your module to official Slax website)
If you want to install all files to specified directory please use this command:
make install DESTDIR=/tmp/destination
sometimes it does not work so if it's your case please have a look on this thread:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=69223
or use my srcipt for saving all changes made in the system in defined time interval:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=61222

Thanks for reading this document :)
Pay attention especially to Q/A "14. How to report a bug?" as very few people are reporting bugs in the correct way.
Please remember - less time which i spent on answering questions which are already answered in this FAQ means more time for adding new features to Slax!

Hi, I was recommended to try Slax-remix since the standard Slax cannot recognize my network card and I do not know how to import the specific driver. When I boot up with the Slax-remix with VirtualBox, the boot cannot complete and stop at message "Performance Events: unsupported p6 CPU model 14 no PMU driver, so ftware events only.". I am sure this message did not come up for standard Slax 612. Anything I missed or there is cheatcode I forget to apply? Appreciate your kindly help

@cscan
this warning shouldn't stop booting procedure - did you try on real PC? do you use remix-v05? i would recommend switching to latest stable which is v08 at the moment.

Hi Fanthom, thanks for your reply. I try remix-v08 under VirtualBox in a IBM X60 machine. I try many times and have no idea to fix. When I switch to an i7 machine, the warning disappear.

hmmm... will try to find something on google, maybe it's kernel config issue.

BTW - pls use remix-v08 thread so this one will fall off from the first forum page.
