Ok very nice job to small probs booting default in kde on the startmenu there is a wpa_gui i think this does not link to any app. Boot into lxd i think thats what its called and the default shortcuts on the desktop are txt files.

I have discovered first bug:
'shutdown' or 'reboot' procedure doesn't work for pendrive with persistent changes (although it works ok for hd). looks like pendrive is unmounted before shutdown procedure is completed. i didn't notice any data loss but it's still a bug. error is not recreated when you use slaxsave.dat container (that's recommended way for storing changes). added to 'known bugs section'.
i haven't manage to make it swedish with the language tool in slax remix, could some one help me and create a swedish.lzm (KDE,Aspell) to attach to my slax remix v7. i got errors and apps added result in default lang.(ENG) plz.!

1) i have just realized that we cant go with autorun in 006-devel as every app will be compiled against libpng-1.2x branch (and we want it for qt-3x only). will try to keep this workaround in 'Ugly hacks' section for next releases as a warning.

For Ubuntu newbies who want to install slax and or slax-remix on an USB stick..
Ubuntu (9.10) mounts an USB-stick by default with the name "USB DISK".
Running bootinst.sh results in the error message:Can't find device to install to.
Make sure you run this script from a mounted device.
Apparently the space between "USB" and "DISK" is what causes the error.
A workaround for this:
open a terminal window
find out which device is your USB DISK cat /etc/mtab | grep USB" might get you something like: "/dev/sdb1 /media/USB\040DISK vfat rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=devkit,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,flush 0 0" where "/dev/sdb1" is the device name.
unmount the USB DISK (via GUI > right mouse button "unmount" or via CLI > umount /dev/sdb1 where "/dev/sdb1" needs to be replaced with the device name of your USB DISK
log in as root su -
make a directory in /media mkdir /media/altUSB
mount your USB DISK again mount /dev/sdb1 /media/altUSB where "/dev/sdb1" needs to replaced with de device name of your USB DISK
cd /media/altUSB/boot (you must cd to the USB DISK in order to let bootinst.sh detect the MBR of your USB DISK, to avoid the MBR of your Hard Disk gets overwritten..)
run the bootinst.sh script./bootinst.sh
after that you can unmount the USB DISK again umount /dev/sdb1
It's up to you if you remove the altUSB directory too.. rmdir /media/altUSB
Playing with v07 here ... have a couple quick questions
-- do the dir2lzm and lzm2dir scripts work properly with Remix?
-- if not, is there some way to consolidate multiple lzms captured from /changes?
I still have a weird situation with using previously saved configuration lzms (from /changes on previous v06) -- and if I just leave them in /slax/modules then when KDE starts I have no mouse or keyboard. But if I remove them from modules and activate them after a text login, THEN startx, they work fine. I have no clue why this should not be the same thing, but I have spent some hours here proving to myself I could not solve the problem, so just left them out of /modules and activate from an autoexec= script before starting KDE.
Side question: --- I got the nvidia module (195.something) for v07, and notice that inside it is an xorg.conf file, clearly not like the default that comes with slax, nor is it anything like the one that is made by nvidia-settings. Is this a standard thing to do, to include that file? How does this play with xconf?
Maybe I should be asking about what xconf is doing -- I imagined it was surveying the system hardware and constructing a new xorg.conf -- in which case it should have set the correct devices for mouse and keyboard, regardless of what the previously existing xorg.conf contained, after all modules are loaded. But it does not, here.
Hi all can somebody please give me a step by step guid on how to use the fglrx-10.5 module as if i just put the module i the module folder and boot all i get is starting xserver and it just stays like that till i reset the comp im using a hd4890 please help.

1) yes - all scripts works in same way like in slax-6.1.2
2) you can use 'Slax-Module-Tools' by jayflood to merge multiple .lzm's
3) changes from v06 should work fine with v07, dont know what's causing mouse/keyboard hang

basically it should work out of the box, although i have seen the same failure on my friends PC. i think that 'udevadm' is calling opensource drm radeon bits (despite of fact that they are blacklisted) which are conflicting with 'fglrx' driver. could you boot with fglrx-10.5 in /slax/modules folder and when hangs happen switch to vt6 (ctrl+alt+F6), log into slax and run 'lsmod | less' command. plese check if any of those drivers are loaded: radeon, ttm, drm_kms_helper, drm, i2c_algo_bit
if yes, then i'll try to find quick solution.

Hi cant relly tell you when i type lsmod loads of txt comes on the screen but i cant see some as there is too much to fit the screen? this problem happend on the last v06 i was never able to fix it. Can you use the driver fine? like i sead im usinh a ati raedon 4890hd 1gb gpu.

Hmm well well your changes script worked nice i managed to make a module for the ati driver via this script and it works nice but my question now is are there lots of extra junk files in this module and can i compair the file content with your ati driver module and delete any if any extra files that may be there? thanks for this module - surprisingly it's working fine also with my hd 2600XT so i have replaced my 'fglrx' module in 'download section' with your one.
2 things which i have changed:
1) 'chmod +x /usr/bin/xconf' - otherwise this script wot be executed
2) removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf - as purpose of 'xconf' script to create this config on every different pc.

I was giving a fight for 4 days with php-5, imagemagick, and gd library in order to setup them on Slax-remix-v06 and finally I managed it. So when I got back to forum, first I was very surprised when I saw Remix-v07 is out and my name is mentioned in a suggestion; thanks for both :)
Also, I feel like I could get on the Remix Train by adding more than suggestions.

I'm testing on my desktops the new pcmanfm: it needs some more packages, because it uses gnome-vfs (so gnome-mime-data, libbonobo, libfm, ORBit2 and GConf - just 2 megs more, I think), but it works well :)
I'll post the txzs soon: tell me if you prefeer a module with this stuff (if I got it right I think you have to add this stuff in the xorg module?). ;)
Have made and are making great strides. Upon my installation of Slackware x86_64 on my machines, I could not get the modem drivers to compile (32 bit) one problem(yes, you and Quax mentioned it), but Slax Remix has come to rescue. I have managed to find fixes for compilation errors on newer 2.6.33.2 and 2.6.34 kernels for the PCTEL modem:
If Slax 7 were to be released today, I think I would be ready for a module all possible thanks to your hard work with slax-remix releases :) Now I need to find/check the other modem drivers and see where they are at at this time?

We have done tremendous job in v07: lxde desktop and speedup tweaks are most significant changes. wish to have more people taking part in testing Beta releases. i was afraid of serious bugs but looks like all is going smoothly so far :)

yes - drivers are another story. i have USR5422 wifi usb adapter and i coudn't get it to work with 64bit kernel (vendor didnt release 64bit drivers). enjoy the world cup - i rather wont as Poland didn't even qualified :(
ERRATA: You will have to convert these modules from Squash3 to Squash4 first!!!
There is a special program (script) included into slax-remix for this task.
Needless to say you'll have to boot slax with some kind of "save changes" option.. ;)
If you keep track of the changes, you could build your own slax module for it, so you'll only have to do
the adduser thing once.
(unpack the 2 modules, merge them together, add the directories & files from the changes directory - regarding the newly added user(s) to it, and dir2lzm it all again into one module... kind a thing)
Thanks mocabilly, for the quick reply. But actually I have already followed the steps mentioned by you and also the steps given in http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=31712 . In the orginal slax 6.1.2 this process works and i can create a sudo user module but in this Slax Remix version after inserting the user module and booting up the user cannot login as DCOPServer does not start.
Please help me out, I want to have a grapical login for my sudo user.

Hmm looks like we may have some ongoing problems with the ati drivers. The module you are using is what i built then fanthom made some small changes. The old ati that fanthom did originally did not work on my system so we tested the new one and all seemed well. Can you tell me are you using any modules that edit or change your xconf/xorg? Also dont use the module from the 4shared as its been updated.
if the modules me and fanthom have made dont work thay must be dependent on certain series 2000,4800 etc a bit of a mix there is not much we can really do as we dont have the other cards to make the modules. Please ask your friend is there card agp or pcie and if thay are set correctly in the bios this may cause problems but im not sure.
Thanx again for an excellent Slax Remix 07 distribution. It is getting better and better :)
One small thing I found so far when testing my applications:
/var/tmp is not set to 777 and can therefore be not written by non-root users and processes.
And are thay set in the bios correct i mean are thay set to the default first card as some boards set the onboard gpu to default all though using a pcie?

Ok sorry for all the msg but to my above posts these are what cause the error msg just before startingx. Fanthom can you check with your ati module start slax and wait till near the end of the boot and then press ctrl+s to pause and you will see the error. and on the pic above on the line 19,20 the error is made because of the text at the bottom if we remove the comment at the bottom the error is gone.

first error is not important - script is trying to unload opensource drivers, in case when they are not loaded - theres nothing to remove so output should go to /dev/null. second line can be removed i think. will try it tomorrow.

i have checked it and second error is cause by extra " (very last character) in xconf script. it's not cousing the hang for sure. let's wait on news from Blaze's friends.
for every body here, do you ever succesfully run slax remix v07 in netbook (with intel atom N280)? I can run slax remix v07 only in text mode with nohotplug parameter, never in graphic mode.

Thanks. The same also applies for /tmp unfortunately. So please check that /tmp and /var/tmp have the following permission for remix v08: drwxrwxrwt. The sticky bit can be set with chmod +t /tmp or chmod 1777 /tmp for all of you that might have some problems with non-root processes and users that can't write to /tmp or /var/tmp.
By the way I also found that dir2lzm and lzm2dir do not show any progress bar anymore. Is this on purpose?
Thats good so we now no for sure that some people need to compile there drivers on there own machines for it to work correctly. So to make things easy for people thay can use the script by fanthom all though this will only work for that specific driver version is there any way for the script to detect the latest version? This is not a problem for me as i can do it manual way but maybe for others.

This script was very tested over a lot of different versions fglrx drivers.

Script have worked over other past slax releases.Problem is that at present time I don't have an ati card to test it and perhaps need some corrections over slax-remix.

in this version boot process wont be slowed down by unnecessary depmod and ldconfig commands. i didn't check it yet but should work :)
Ok only just got round to testing your new ati xconf and i have tested in base dir and modules dir and it works perfect no errors so thanks for that i will inc this with all the ati modules i make. The script for making the ati modules i would not inc that with v08 i would just put it in the FAQ but It's your decision any way keep up the good work :)

i'm lost a little bit - do you want to install slax on usb or Micro cd? if on usb then just copy /boot and /slax folder on your usb stick and run 'bootinst.bat' (windows) or 'bootinst.sh (linux). if on cd then copy those two folders to /root directory, make all necessary modifications and then run /root/slax/make_iso.sh to create new iso image which can be burned to your cd. You will need 001-core and 002-desktop only to boot into graphical mode with lxde desktop :)

sorry for quite short answers but i'm busy at the moment.
i did all the steps mentioned by you. The problem is that after i make any partition with gparted, the partition's mount point does not appear. So i cannot mount the partition. The problem lies with the auto detection of partions. As mount point entries are also not visible in /etc/fstab. I have to manually create the entry and then create the mount directory under /mnt then only gparted provides me with the mount options. Kindly give a solution to it.

This may be a quirky gparted behaviour . If you were to make one partition, gparted cannot mount it , but if you were to make another partition , you will find that gparted will detect the first new partition.
If you quit and restart gparted , it should be able to detect all the new partitions.
I can't get 006-devel to work with lzm2dir. after executing lzm2dir 006-devel / I am told that certain files are too short and c1 is respawning too fast! Any help?

afaik syslinux is for FAT and iso. i would try with lilo if you're going to use linux fs. theres liloinst.sh script in /boot folder which should be helpful in installing lilo on your hd or pendrive.
you can use 'cfdisk' to create and modify partitions. jcsoh is right - i had to restart cfdisk to get access to newly created partitions. konqueror automounted them under /media dir.

dir2lzm works for me. make sure that you are not doing any operations on slax modules on windows partitions!

Some questions regarding sysv start/stop scripts in Slax Remix 07:
Due to backward compatibility all of my modules use some sysv start/stop scripts which basically work fine, but:
1.) When I halt or reboot the system Slax Remix 07 does not seem to use the stop scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d, although I have the appropriate symlinks in /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/K* and /etc/rc.d/rc6.d/K*. Is Slax Remix 07 using these stop scripts at all?
2.) In other Linux distros you can track sysv start scripts in /var/log/messages or with dmesg, but in Slax I only get kernel messages. How can I enable this behaviour?
It's been a long time since I've posted on here, because I pretty much gave up on Slax due to the lack of maintenance.
I appreciate you making this system. The other Slax is that old it's not much good. Yours works nicely on my laptop, and has some nice touches. I compiled some programs and made some lzm modules as usual.
I put it on a USB stick to give it a go (with old Slax still on the solid state hard drive), and it worked nicely... once.
From then on, it generally doesn't want to work. It gets stuck at the udev stage of booting.
I've tried setting up the stick again, which I use ext2 with liloinst.sh and go through the same steps. It seems pretty hit and miss, but mostly miss. Is there a reason for this?
I usually take the changes=slaxchanges out of the bottom of lilo.conf and delete the slaxchanges directory to keep it fresh all the time. Even if I keep it original as the iso and liloinst.sh makes it, it keeps getting stuck at that udev part of boot.
Any ideas?
Also, do I need to replace the initrd.lz that it starts with, with the other one from your download area?

when opening kword, leafpad kpdf file by choosing media my sdc1 gave me

1) udevadm is a 'pain in the ass' in slax. try 'nopcmcia' 'nohd with from= cheatcode' 'nohotplug' etc. please also try Service Pack 1 as it contains updated rc scripts.
2) initrd.lz from download section is the clean one (without bootsplash) so users can add their own. that's already explained in the faq - reading it is generally a good idea :)

we are getting tight with space so is anybody using 'bind' package under remix? if nobody uses i would like to remove it in next release.
The last one is the whole reason I recompile everything, i like slax to automatically find and install available printers at boot (this will auto install a usb HP printer for you).
I always read faq and when i downloaded v07 i downloaded the clean initrd with it but just so people no have you replaced the initrd in the download section with the new v07 service pack 1 clean initrd? and thanks.

I have been using it since the release of v05. It work right out of the box for my Wifi card, which uses to be a little tricky with slax 6.1.2. Unfortunately, the context menu for convert modules in Konqueror, are now missing from my remix. Even after a fresh install. Someone could point me the way to look for a solution?

It's still too random if it wants to start or not. I tried your servicepack mod, and also the cheatcode. Keep in mind I use ext2, and things I read about cheatcodes seem to talk of the graphical bootup which is what the fat32 install gives you. Either way, I put it in lilo.conf so it now looks like this:

Well my last usb wlan adapter i could never get to work it was a cheap generic one so i thought i would buy a new one a TP-Link TL-WN321G and i tested in windows 7 ultimate x64 and wow it installed its self so i was happy then i thought i would try slax Remembering i have never got any linux to work with the internet and with the use of sns-tool it was a breeze no problems so im very happy thanks so much.
Hate to mention this, because it might be like a low blow to the excellent work that you have done, but I must let you know. I wish others would do this, but no one has come forward :(, Copy2ram is not ejecting the CD after it finishes loading. It might be a problem with my hardware? But the other remixes did eject, so I would not know for sure :(
I had to eject the cdrom since it was not automagically ejected :(

I never doubt that the context menu works at v07. I just puzzled it vanishes from my remix versions and don't know where to start to fix it. Actually, it does not show anymore in v05, v06 and v07, even after a fresh install and with no extra modules. I guess something gets corrupted in my files...But I'm sure that sooner or later I figure it out. It's a minor problem.

txz2lzm work on my system with service pack,i am write from it.
In a clean installation service-pack works but with all my modules txz2lzm is not working.
I don't know the reason.
I have removed my personal configuration and the problem persist.

I think it is not bloating - thus you make troubleshooting easier because one can do a
'zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_xxx'
in case something isn't working as expected.
If it's only sqlzma4 and aufs in addition to the vanilla kernel having the .config would be sufficient.

I have been trying to make work a Conceptronic C150RU usb wireless adapter. It has the RT2870 chipset. Kernel module rt2870sta loads correctly, but it is not able to find the firmware rt3070.bin. Copying /lib/firmware/rt2870.bin to rt3070.bin gives error messages. I attach the relevant dmesg part:

I'm no expert regarding ndiswrapper but:
NDISwrapper requires at least the ".inf" and the ".sys" files invariably supplied as parts of the Windows driver. For example, if the driver is called "mydriver", with the files mydriver.inf and mydriver.sys and vendorid:productid 0000:0000, then NDISwrapper installs the driver to /etc/ndiswrapper/mydriver/. This directory contains three files:
* 0000:0000.conf, which contains information extracted from the inf file
* mydriver.inf (the original inf file)
* mydriver.sys (the driver file)
And it seems like ndiswrapper needs windows xp drivers, can not handle (yet) ndis 6 (vista) drivers.NDISwrapper does not implement NDIS 6 (Windows Vista version) yet, limiting drivers to Windows XP [1]. While it is not a major problem for the x86 architecture because of the vast popularity of Windows XP x86-32, many vendors choose to make 64-bit drivers only for Windows Vista—which means that Linux systems using the x86-64 architecture are unable to use such networking devices.

2) no - first reason: you can install iso on usb easily, second: my upload is 256Kbit only.

please try firmware provided by flux (thanks for that) and when you still will be in troubles try to repeat everything which you have done before:
a) plug your stick in (to try drivers provided by kernel first)
b) take it out
c) install and load ndiswrapper module
d) plug your stick back
e) upload /var/log/dmesg to pastebin.com and post weblink here for review

Thanks for your investigations! So what are your recommendations or plans for Slax remix? Do you want to fix this in Slax Remix 08 or should I rather use K* in runlevel 3 then? Are you sure that this will really do the job, since I am not sure whether this is working? Did you get some reply from Tomas about this yet?
Regarding /etc/syslog.conf can you say out of you head which parameters could possibly show any messages of my SYSV scripts? This would make it much easier to log any problems in start/stop sysv scripts.

1) there's nothing what i can fix here. you need to understand how those scripts works. Let's say that you are switching from runlevel 3 to runlevel 0, so after execution of command 'init 0':
a) all scripts from /etc/rc.d/rc3.d with K* in name are executed (because you are leaving runlevel 3), then
b) all scripts from /etc/rc.d/rc0.d with S* in name are executed (because you are entering runlevel 0)
also: you could name your 'shutdown scripts' as /etc/rc.d/rc6.d/S*, so they would be started when 'entering' runlevel 0. for sure you cant name them as /etc/rc.d/rc6.d/K*. hope it's more clear now.
2) will send an email to Tomas M about it.
3) i have added 'deamon.* /var/log/deamons' to /etc/syslog.conf but all the feedback which i got came from 'acpid' daemon. half success so. make sure that your services run in 'verbose mode' and produces some log files in /var/log directory.

Thank you so much for your explanation and hints :) I think I understand now better and will do some experimenting based on these findings.
I also experimented with 'daemon.* and user.*' but could not see any messages of my scripts in the logs unfortunately. Can you say how to write a start/stop SYSV script that it produces verbose logs? Most stuff is displayed using echo "..." and I can see this at startup, but how to also make it visible in a file?
Do you know by chance any good example code here? Usually in other distros my scripts worked out of the box and were logged in /var/log/messages.
What do you think using upstart (http://upstart.ubuntu.com/) for Slax Remix or would you rather leave this to Slackware or Slax/Thomas? Could this bring even better startup times due to parallelizing start scripts?

i know it's another 'ugly hack' and syslog should work as it should but have no other ideas at the moment.
2) some services can be started in parallel and some cant - apache needs to wait for rc.inet1 etc. i didn't try upstart but i think that rc.* scripts in v07 are optimized in 90%. i'm getting 15 seconds to full kde desktop! i think it would be very hard to do it faster :)

I successfully used this how-to and loaded nouveau in Slackware 13.1 x86_64 with self compiled 2.6.34 kernel. I believe I can try to do the same for remix or test it should you include it the next time? The nv driver is no longer being supported by Nvidia(free one used in Xorg), the other one(s) are.

I tested my SysV init scripts and they work fine now when I put the S* (Startscript) AND K* (Killscript) or rather links in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d, rc4.d and rc5.d :)
Some small improvements, I would like to see for Remix 08:
1.) /etc/rc.d/rc.6: # Run linux-live cleanup-script:

This is cleaner when using the same scripts with a full installation of Slax Remix.

HDD INSTALL:
This version of remix works for this computer of mine a MSI X340 laptop. I work around with it enough to be pleased on CD and it made me move to a hdd install (or frugal install as it is called in this forum). Mounting content of iso on the right partition with:
I found a few minor bugs but will keep up for now on my specific interests. Waiting to be more familiar with the beast.
DUAL DISPLAY:
Working around with it, I just realized that contrarily to slax612, the virtual screen is wide adjusted and the screen resize icon will take maximum size for my second screen. With its huge virtual screen setup it has the potential to take most dual screen setup:

Thus there is no need to modify the xorg.conf file to accomodate two screens. All I needed was a script to accomodate my BENQ g2220 additional monitor:

WIFI:
I like very much to be plugged automatically with the kde > internet > wpa_gui. The one that you have does not work for me yielding the message: command wpa-gui not found. I do not know what solution you will consider, but under slax612 I had the same problem and solved it:
But it might be a bug only for the MSI X340. I will try it on another laptop.
FIREFOX:
For some reason in Firefox, it is not possible by left clicking and holding down to slide hyperlinks from one place to another in the side panel of the bookmarks, but also from the actual window url to the panel of bookmarks. But this might be a minor problem. However contrarily to slax612's firefox module remix's firefox will allow in view > toolbars > customize the option for small icons: a function that I appreciate.

So like this, Slax Remix builds a complete eco-system to develop things for itself :) Can you please explain since when you had done this modifications and what they are and what problem you see for a full install? 1) Slax uses only 3 runlevels in fact:
a) 0 and 6 - for shutdown and reboot
b) 1 for maintenance
c) 3 for normal work in multiuser environment (runlevel 4 is the same as 3 +GUI)

2) i have implemented some changes in SP1 already:
a) /etc/mtab is deleted at initrd stage (to avoid remounting of root '/' partition in /etc/rc.S)
b) root partition is not mounted read only when linuxrc is finishing - fsck doesnt make sense on aufs (original fsck part is also removed from rc.S - i have my own implementation which better suits slax)
generally i would recommend to go with original/untouched rc.S, rc.M and rc.6 scripts from this package: http://slackfind.net/en/packages/search/?name=sysvinit-scripts&distversion=9
when you want to go with 'full install' cause i can mess up those scripts even more in next releases (slax is different than slackware so some unnecessary things can be changed/removed).
3) SP2 should be out next thursday when my jail at work will finish. i have discovered serious bug in SP1: when you use 'copy2ram' and 'changes=/slax' cheatcode you'll finish with unbootable system (you can try it yourself - it's safe). i have fixed it already but need some time to gather rest of fixes all together.
remix-v08 should be out in 3rd-4th week of July when i return from holiday.

standard slax's 'xconf' does the job. i remember that in v05 or v06 i had to remove some dodgy xf86-video-* drivers which were causing segfault as well - they were removed in slackware-13.1 anyway, so should be fine now.

i have this problem as well :) my todo list is quite empty at the moment. one thing comes to my mind: refreshing of icon scheme in kde as we (with Blaze) did only small part. i know it might be not exciting job but would be nice to have new, refreshed kde icon look :)

Right now with SP1 everything seems work to fine as far as I can say, although I found that /etc/matb seems to have multiple entries of the same kind and that the filesystem seems to complain about some inconsistencies from time to time? I will try whether I can use the original Slackware scripts then.
3.) Curious to see how things will work with SP2 then :)
4.) For a full install I don't use the original /etc/initrd.lz, but rather replace it with initrd.splash which only carries the boot splash picture. Do I need anything else in initrd.lz at all or does vmlinuz carry all the neccessary kernel files for a full installation?
5.) Is there any possibility to make an animated boot splash image, i.e. use a progress bar? I have found some hints and pictures that this could work, but I could not find any proper docs howto? Do I need to activate animation in the lilo.conf line like append = "splash=silent quiet"?

I have a new wifi usb dongle that is based on the "ar9271" chip and is not currently supported by the kernel by defauls so i had to compile the "ath9k_htc" driver (from compat-wirelass) to get it working. Here is the module containing the driver and firmware to make it work if anyone has wifi using the same chip. http://filebeam.com/23fd8fe872ec6c84f1892c11f4939ccc
The 'CD eject after copy2ram' function is hardcoded into liblinuxlive - thus one would have to unpack initrd.gz
change the setting for 'cd_autoeject' from '1' to '0' in liblinuxlive and repack initrd.gz.

Well, I checked cleanup and there is no difference between slax-6.2.0 and slax-remix-v07
but why in slax-6.2.0 when I want to reboot will not eject CD, but it will eject CD before rebooting in Slax-remix-v07 ??

1) looks like kernel driver for your usb microphone (webcam?) is loaded first and takes priority over Intel HD card. to prevent it - just add 'blacklist snd-usb-audio' to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and 'modprobe snd-usb-audio' to /etc/rc.d/rc.local. in this case your webcam will be initalized after HD card and your sound should be fine.
you can also try to set priorities by editing alsa.conf file as described here: http://alsa.opensrc.org/MultipleCards
which should be more elegant way.

first of all - you didn't do what i have asked you for:
1) you suppose to use pastebin.com for data (which also means that you didnt read FAQ answer 14)

i'm fairly sure that your usb microphone acts as a primary alsa card, so blacklisting 'snd-usb-audio' as described above is the correct way of solving this,

as you can see usb is now the last in queue.
your wifi should work out of the box. type 'iwconfig' and check if it's named as 'wlan0' (some people had it as wlan1). in case of troubles post /var/log/dmesg on pastebin.com and post weblink here.
Remix-07v is very fantasy! But In my box, driver for Adaptec AIC7902 (for Ultra320 SCSI controller) seems not to be supported. Hope it could be included in next version.
Nice to you to try to find some way to put me into motion for remix. However, design is not my primary center of interest. I prefer to leave that topic to professionals or to almost as professionals. In fact I like very much the original facture of slax as it is. And in fact in my use of remix the first thing I have done is removing the wallpaper. As one says all tastes are in nature. I will find some ways of being useful later. For now I will be an observer.
I am mostly interested in laptop use. Two main problems are those of wifi and of dual display. Thus, what was of outmost interest to me were the aspects of wifi and of dual head for laptop use for MSI X340 and HP pavilion 2713ca laptop. Remix worked a little better on the dual display issue with its bigger virtual display but did not worked completely for me out of the box, xrandr is still needed (I have an intel graphic card on the MSI).
Wifi programs had to be implemented manually thru changes in wpasupplicant.conf and use of command line. The sns-tool utility did not worked for me. I have tried it repeatedly (though I hope not in the wrong manner).
Is there ndiswrapper installed stock on remix for BCM4328 wifi driver installation (HP pavilion 2713ca)? Is there any gui facilitating such an installation of windows drivers when linux driver do not work well (in this case the wl.ko driver)?
My problems in firefox in trying to move links from one location to another by sliding them just went away at reboot or with the installation of your service pack.

1) i think it's new udev package which loads the kernel modules in pararell mode (more randomly). Anyway blacklisting of 'snd-usb-audio' and loading it with rc.local works fine.

As you can see changelog is not too big. please test nouveau driver as i would like to remove obsolete 'xf86-video-nv' package in v08.

i didn't recompile kernel in sp2 (it's old one from sp1) so you can use System.map from sp1. i'll provide it every time when new kernel appears. Dont know how to read those values without System.map

Luckilly we have Nvidia 'vdpau' and AMD/ATI 'xvba' backends to vaapi so playing 1080p movies is possible on many PC configurations!
How to enable 'vaapi' feature?
'vaapi' as mplayer video output needs to be selected as in example below: mplayer -vo vaapi -va vaapi /path_to_movie/
VAAPI works on Intel GPU's (not all, dont know which - sorry), Nvidia cards which uses 195.X driver and AMD/Ati cards from HD series - Catalyst 9.10 or higher
When you dont have such GPU requirements in your PC but have 2 or more cpu cores, you can still play HD movies with Mplayer by using 'multithread' feature.
To enable it just add: mplayer -lavdopts threads=2 /path_to_movie/
to mplayer systax. in this case workload will be balanced between 2 cores and tearing effect should be gone.

I really like this remix of slax because of the new kernel, but i have a small question.
Is the kernel optimized for modern CPU's (dual cores and up) or is it i486?
If its not would it be possible to supply a optimize kernel or the sorce + all patches used in this distro for custom finetuning?

1) Quemu error doesnt recreate in Vbox and also in real mode (usb, hd). I believe it's some kind of timeout cause quemu is noticeably slower comparing to Vbox. will check it once again by the time of releasing v08

qemu got problems with X/lxde, it's a sum of known bugs (I hit those too).
if you want to run slax-remix in a virtual machine virtualbox is the right choice.

there might be some extra spaces in the name of movie(s). the best idea is to use 'TAB' key to fill out rest of path. just type '/root/Pred(now press Tab, or press it twice if more than one file with this name exist in /root directory). i'm very interesting in the result :) please let me know if vaapi works for you, also whats your cpu usage and GPU model.

ext4dev might be for Slax 6.1.2, but for remix, you should try ext4 only. ext4 is compiled in on Slax Remix, but not on official Slax 6.1.2. Hope this helps.

That should be right. Slax 6.2 or Slax 6.1.2 don't have ext4 built into kernel, so you were right in trying ext4dev. Sorry. To fix the issue, run Slax Remix and see your hard drive :)

/mnt/live/images/001-core.sq4/usr/share/doc to /usr/share/doc and run language-selection-tool again.

Ok i have tested and i had no problems it runs fine and sound is fine. this module works for me on old GeforceGo 7150 card so should work also for your one...
looks like your /etc/X11/xorg.conf is incorrect, did you run it with 'autoexec=xconf;telinit~4' cheatcode?
if not then please try to boot with nVidia-x86-256.35-remix-v07 in text mode, run 'xconf' and then 'startx' manually.
if it wont work try latest working nvidia module - from 195.xx branch.

The icon set is from here http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Vista-Inspirate?content=31585 but im only using commonly used icon types im in the middle of trying to replace all kde icons but its time consuming resizing icons etc but it is looking to me a lot more modern i also have a bootmenu image done and bootsplash verbose and silent and a kde splash image logout image and a new kmenu image it all blends together nicely.

I booted up with nVidia-x86-256.35-remix-v07 in text mode under 'clear' Slax-Remix-v07 + edited SP2 (without nouveau and without my modules - http://pastebin.com/vYMXH9CA)- all Ok.
If i try run my modules with any nvidia driver - X11 does not work.
You were right, one of my modules was overwriting /usr/share/doc and deleted the doc link :(
I fixed this and tried to use your language-selection-tool, which helped me to better understand at what different places language settings take place :)
Nevertheless I found two minor bugs:
1.) chmod: cannot access `/tmp/language-selection/ett/rc.d/rc.font': No such file or directory
2.) Type in your choice: iso8859-1. Selected iocharset: iso8859-1 is not on the list, please try once again
The errors in /usr/bin/language-selection-tool can be fixed e.g. like the following:
1.) line 154: chmod +x $dir/etc/rc.d/rc.font # just a typo correction
2.) line 198 & 205: ans=`grep -m1 $fat /usr/share/doc/language/fat.txt` # -m1 will limit the results to only one finding

Hi can i ask how did you manage to get flashplayer installed in opera if i download opera then install from the official site then i download flshplayer and i have tryed placing it in all the different lib folders but it still does not work? i would use your module but it has the user folder and if i remove this flshplay stops working.
Hello i like to thank for this great release it looks great and works very good. I have i minor problem that may just be a configuration option that i just don't know about yet. The problem is the sound volume is very low. I turned the volume all the way up from the kmixer and in the kplayer but still the volume is at least 2x lower than it is in windows and in my Mint 9 (Ubuntu 10.04) install. Is there any other configuration option to boost the sound volume? My sound chip is integrated in the motherboard and is recognized as (00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)) by lspci and as realtek ALC888 in kmix.

firefox provides some libs with default build (like sqlite) so maybe you could add them to your slax/modules and 007-firefox wont be necessary?

I like vlc player too! but slax, & slax remix already have mplayer. You can put it back in slax-remix, but you need to convert a module to sq4 from sq3 format. You can also try to rebuild it against new libraries use a slackbuild then txz2lzm or tgz2lzm and you will be done :)
Hello does anyone know what are the dependencies of the flashplayer plugin? Im trying to use Opera but it doesn't recognize the flash plugin unless Firefox is installed. I tried to deleted all from the firefox module and left only the flash plugin and its directory structure but it doesn't work when firexof is gone so it depends on some library that comes with firefox but i don't know which.

2. extract the file and you would find libflashplugin.so;
3. put it in some directory, for instance: /tmp/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins;
4. make an individual lzm module: dir2lzm /tmp/ libflashplugin.lzm and put it in $USBpendriver/slax/modules.
Next time as booting from USBpendriver, it would work with firefox and opera.
You don't seam to understand me. I have no problem making modules. I did try using the latest flash player from adobe site but i just doest work if the files of mozilla arent in the file system. I even tried an old flashplayer version 9.x that i found on google but the problem is the same opera doest detect it even when I put it in both the plugin directories in the opera search path (usr/lib/mozilla/plugins the usr/lib/opera/plugins and the plugin folder in homefolder/.opera) But once add install firefox it starts detecting the plugin just fine.

This would be very very nice remix v07 with sp2 is for me very stable and its all good it would be good to now stick with the current kernel with v07 and sp2 but implement kde4 latest version i would help as much as i can in bug testing etc.

hi dark2x3d,if you want kde 4.4.5 you have to install slackware current on a hd,install every programs you want,install video driver, tweak system, you have to install kernel with aufs squashfs and fuse fs,after this put LLS script in tmp and run script this is first step...

theres another way of resolving opera+flash issue: you can remove 007-firefox module, download flash from slackware repo
and then use slackyd to track missing dependencies - 'slackyd -d'. slackyd will suggest adding missing libraries automatically.

When booting up remix 07 on a lenovo b450 laptop , I get a black or rather no display.
It's not really an issue as I am running standard slax 6.12 , but I need slax remix 06 with a newer kernel as it recognised my ethernet card
as opposed to Slax 6.1.2. Again it is not really an issue as I used the laptop offline , but it's nice to know I can make it work with slax remix 06.

For me on a quick test boot times did not change i removed kde,kdeapps,koffice and it would not autoboot i had to boot to test mode and type xwmconfig pick kde then type startx also there was lots of missing icons and on shutdown i noticed lots of errors. Hope this helps. PS size is around 270mb thats hardley huge.
aah.... try to look at end user point of view...... As a computer system they need :
core, startX, KDE4 n office (at the very basic, WP & spread) then mplayer n browser, my guess the total is about 350MB (not counting additional libs n so forth), if they opted for oOo so it can read docx file my guess is about 400 mark (hopefully less then 400MB after fine tuning).
on a i686 with 512MB ram it take 5 min mark, can u imagine on i386, i486 n i586 on the same ram (or less) config ????
Thats why remix breath new life on these 3 technology... i mean multi thread, dual core/core duo or atom NXXX got no problems with that size....

Lol is that the icon theme i was working on i think it is i have done most of the comman filetypes im not interested in doing icons for specific apps i have done alot of the mime types and hardware icons also filesystem icons in 16,22,34,48,64,128 sizes but if you intend to do the complete icon types i will leav it to you.

1) your slax build has plenty of modules which are causing troubles, you can sort it in 2 ways:
a) reduce number of modules
b) add 'vmalloc=512MB' (256MB also should be enough) to kernel parameters in /boot/slax.cfg
2) problem with 'underquoted definition of AM_PATH_IMLIB' lies in 'imlib' package which is written badly,
this issue is not sorted yet with latest imlib-1.9.15-i486-7 version but shouldnt harm any compilation - it's just a warning

your config looks fine except of one thing - for remix-v07: CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED=
should be 'n' due to updated 'udev' package. to be 100% sure -
i would take .config from remix-v07 and copy it to unpacked and patched zen sources dir and then: make oldconfig
make && make modules install

make sure that 'seamonkey-solibs-2.0.5-i486-1.txz' and 'sqlite-3.6.23.1-i486-1.txz' have symbolic links in /usr/lib pointing to correct libraries in /usr/lib/seamonkey etc. i just wrote simple script for creating symlinks automatically: #!/bin/sh

Hi guys! I've got this tiny little script called "autoslax" that I keep in rootcopy/sbin and I'd like it to be automatically executed right after slax boots up. To do that I had autoexec=autoslax appended as my boot option and everything was fine until I updated to v07, because it's broken now. Any fixes?
I still can't get autoexec to work. The only thing I replaced were the modules and the kernel + initrd. Nothing happens even if I add xconf as autoexec parameter. Tips?

Can anyone tell me how i can force Slax to boot in 1440x900 resolution instead of 1024x768? I tried adding vga=866 867 and 868 but all of them send me to 1280x960. I also tried vga=0x0365 and it had the same effect. In Ubuntu 10.04 this works by default at 1440x900 so is the remix lacking support for this. And just to be clear i mean console/text mode not gui mode in X the rezulution is fine.
I have not exposed chmod in new icons theme for Slax Remix (many files)!

1. Unpacked the 003-kde.sq4.lzm
2. Unpacked the slax-inspirate-part1.sq4.lzm
3. Delete in the package 003-kde.sq4.lzm

4. Copy all contents from slax-inspirate-part1.sq4.lzm to /usr/share/icons/ (003-kde.sq4.lzm)
5. Unpacked the 004-kdeapps.sq4.lzm
6. Unpacked the slax-inspirate-part2.sq4.lzm
7. Delete in the package 004-kdeapps.sq4.lzm /usr/share/icons/ these folders: crystalsvg

I tested the module nVidia-x86-256.35-remix-v07.sq4.lzm in Slax Remix v07 SP2 with my Nvidia 8600GT:
1. without nouveau + my modules - X11 does not started.
2. with nouveau + my modules - X11 does not started.
Without the module nVidia-x86-256.35-remix-v07.sq4.lzm and without nouveau + my modules - X11 is started. dmesg | grep vmalloc
and nouthing.
1st many thanks for everybody involved. I like it :)
But unlike classic Slax, Remix-v07 w applied SP2 works fine for me only in "always fresh"/"copy to ram" modes. Otherwise the k-desktop loading hangs at the stage "Loading Desktop" and i get strange register dumps in the dmesg "BUG:Sheduling while atomic..".
It is not HW specific - tested on amd laptop and on intel desktop.
Also i get messages from various fs drivers (ext4, reiser) that they can`t find a superblock even if i don`t have such partitions. Maybe the way it detects/mounts partitions should be reviewed.

BTW - i have found that your 'dvb-007-3mix' package has unwanted files in /lib/modules/2.6.34-remix/ folder (modules.dep, modules.alias, etc). you need to delete them otherwise you may expect some troubles with loading kernel dependant modules, all covered by slax documentation: http://www.slax.org/documentation_create_modules_rules.php

looks like your filesystem got corrupted - common issue also with official slax. please use slaxsave.dat for storing changes: http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=64744
please boot v07/SP2 with basic modules only (nothing extra added). sometimes modules from slax-6.1.2 can cause errors on remix due to different glibc, other libraries, etc.
finally - please provide 'dmesg' uploaded on 'pastebin.com' site for reviewing of mounting issues.

i was able to recreate the error on my slax build - i have used 30+ random modules downloaded from slax site and booted on pc with nvidia card and nVidia-x86-256.35-remix-v07.sq4.lzm module. as expected - X11 didn't start and i got exac same error in /var/log/Xorg.o.log as you had.
then i added 'vmalloc=512MB' cheatcode and X11 started up without problems: http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/1158/snapshot1bl.png
it does also work for nouveau and 'vmalloc' parameter
'vmalloc' cheatcode should work for you. please try once again.

slaxsave.dat placed in the root folder (not in slax or boot) and cheat code seems to solve some "strange" problems i had. I`ll do more testing and post the results. I had corrupted filesystem also. But this invalidates the following statement I read (& believed in) at the top of the page: Solution: error does not recreate when you use slaxsave.dat container. fixed in Service-Pack-1 (bug closed) - it`s should be reopened.
I think that if the fix is impossible by now, this workaround could be default in the cfg file and changes.dat could be created by the install scripts - asking the user to choose the size.
I guess that the remaining space in changes.dat (when used) is the free space on the root (aufs) file system inside slax. I wonder also where to place the .swap file to be automatically found and what the directory [BOOT] is used for.

You are right!
The package dvb-007-3mix is crashed X11 and all system.
I deleted in dvb-007-3mix /lib/modules/2.6.34-remix/ these files modules.dep and modules.alias
Then i booted up Slax-Remix-v07 (with vmalloc=512MB cheatcode) + SP2 (with nouveau) + my modules (edited dvb-007-3mix) + nVidia-x86-256.35-remix-v07.sq4.lzm and it was working.
do we have a complete list of all Slax and Slax Remix cheatcodes? I know that for Slax some are listed at http://www.slax.org/documentation_boot_cheatcodes.php and in cheatcodes.txt, but what about all the other ones like vmalloc=..., fschk=..., etc.? Maybe it would be great to add them to the Slax FAQ and the cheatcodes.txt file?
@Fanthom my test reults (only base modules, changes=/slax/slaxsave.dat):
desktop: MB i945G/ cpu P4-D 2.8Ghz (asrock or so) - it was able to load half of the initrd.lz, then stopped and displayed "boot failed press ctrl-alt-del...", but under Qemu from the same physical(usb) disc, same machine - no problems.
laptop: Acer Aspire 5024 cpu Athlon64 gpu X700, same (usb)disc - loads fine, almost perfect w fiew glitches:
- strange: capslock and num lock are in strange state;
- There is item for missing program in the menu (KDE): "Development"/->"Dynamic dialog editor" (missing kmdr-editor);
- "Internet"/->"wpa_gui" doesn`t work, error is (from wpa_gui): libQtGui.so.4 ....no such file or directory
- my superblock mount errors - as requested dmesg and partition table are for a month at pastebin: http://pastebin.org/406324 lines 308 ...377; at the beginning I ve put parrtition table of sda(fixed HDD)

1) good that changes issue is sorted.
2) this error was slightly different - usb was umounted before slax modules and caused hang during reboot/halt. your issue (posixvol compatibility for windows filesystems) cant be fixed easily i'm afraid, at least i'm not able to do it.
3) you mean 'bootinst.bat' 'bootinst.sh' and 'liloinst.sh' ? hmm... interesting, i can add info about 'changes=/slax/slaxsave.dat' cheatcode to those files :)
4) slaxsave.dat is just mounted over aufs so size of container determines size of aufs (root partition).
5) when booting hangs with: "looking for Slax data Directory", you will have an access to the debug shell so take those actions:
a) run 'lsmod' and make sure that aufs kernel module is loaded
b) run 'blkid' and check if slax booting partition is recognized correctly
c) try to mount it manually in for example /tmp/hd dir

6) Qemu is a virtual machine and has different "hardware" than host machine. that's why slax is booting correctly.

9) your sda2 partition is an extended one and theres no real filesystem on it, looks like you have partitioned your hd under windows and it causes troubles.

my id of extended partition sda3 is '5' (your is 'f') and i dont have such messages in /var/log/dmesg. it's not a big issue - IMO.
10) slax will find and use all available swap partitions during boot. if you want to use swap file then you need to mount it through /etc/rc.d/rc.local as /etc/fstab is overriden on every boot.
11) BOOT folder could be omitted but i would leave it as it contains essential files for booting process and users shouldn't mess with those files (except of editing config files). they can do all mess in /slax/folder - except of *.sgn file.

This is not a insult its posative criticism but have you checked all the icons as there seems to be missing icons in some folders i have not checked all but some folders have more icons than others also there is loads of icons in the 128 folder missing or is it supposed to be that way?

All the necessary icons are present in the icons theme of Slax Inspirate.
I have left some icons untouched from Inspirate icons theme - they can it is useful.
The 128x128 folder should be such agree the default icons theme of Slax.
Regarding icons, does anybody know how to change the size of my Desktop icons in general?
I am using various icon types including *.ico, which carry multiple icon sizes, but I wonder if I force desktop icons always to be of size 32x32 e.g.?
If I copy an *.ico file to /root/Desktop it appears in size 32x32, but when I refer to the same file over a *.desktop file it appears as an 48x48 size icon?
I found how to change the icon size of the taskbar, but how for the desktop?
Any idea on how icons work and how to influence this behaviour? Thanks :)

- On "intel-p4-D" machine the boot doesn`t hang with "looking for Slax data Directory", but with Boot Failed "Please change disks and press a key to continue" and when i press - the boot manager on the first hdd loads it`s boot menu (grub,centos); I`m going to prepare ubuntu boot disk @usb hdd & try booting it.
- at laptop: I`ve changed id of my extended partition from f to 5 (like yours) via fdisk. It didn`t fix the minor problems - slax still tries to mount the extended partition w every FS available.
- with strange state of keyboard upon boot I mean that it acts like num lock is active, but if i press caps-lock TWICE it deactivates the leds and normal typing is O.K.;

1) My gparted q4 converted version does not work. trying to install another version of gparted I get error message: module conversion failed.Maybe there is a gparted bla, bla, bla folder already.

2) I have a usb key that is mounted on media instead of on mount. It is not possible to change the name of the folders. Why is that? To what is due that difference in mounting? How can I circumvent that read only status?

here's the story:
1) slax starts dhcpcd for every network interface which is found. in your case wlan0 obtained IP from the router and eth0 didn't get it (there was no router connection for eth0 ) so it received IP from the standard pool which is 169.xxx.xxx.xxx (not sure exactly). it really doesn't matter which IP eth0 has because all traffic goes through wlan0.
2) question about 'vaapi' was directed to all 'Intel' remix users, not just you :) it has no relationship with your wifi indeed.

1) some adviced from the slax forum:
a) try to format usb stick with older fat-16 filesystem or linux fs (ext2 or xfs are the best choices for pendrives)
b) burn /boot folder on CD and put /slax folder on pendrive. in this case slax will start booting form CD and then it finds *.sgn file on pendrive so continues booting from usb
Adventages:
- works for PC's with usb booting issues.
- you can save persistent changes on usb stick.
let me know if it works for you.
2) looks like changing of partition id is not enough. i guess that you'll have to make repartition under linux to get rid of this behaviour. as i said earlier - not worth the hassle.
3) true - didn't know about it :) you can disable numlock startup by: chmod -x /root/.kde/Autostart/numlock
4) wpa_gui is still there because some users (who can afford qt4) might need it. i dont want to force them to reinstall 'wpa_supplicant' just because one (small) component was removed.
5) first time i hear about 'Bootable_NoEmulation.img' - from where it comes from? did you use unetbootin or any 3-rd application to 'burn' iso image on usb stick?
6) all credits goes to Blaze89 - i have just done small reconfiguration. seems that remix-v08 will be even more attractive as Blaze is preparing new icon scheme :)

in the folder in which you make the conversion. try to use slackyd to download latest gparted module.
2) 'media' folder is for removable devices (mounted by hal), 'mnt' folder is for all devices present in the system when slax (or any other linux os) boots up. where did you get 'read only status'? on the pendrive? maybe 'dosfsck -wa /dev/sdb1' could help you?

1) boot remix with basic modules only (also witout your changes) and you will see it - your extra modules are messing up here. btw - you could find the answer yourself by reading remix FAQ answer 14.
2) SP2 is a service-pack which contains small fixes/improvments before next release. chengelogs for sp1 and sp2 are in this thread - just search for them.
@fanthom: :-) Thank you for your suggestion # 1)-b - to burn a CD - it`s a funny idea, but since the classic slax boots there, I decided that remix should do it as well. I was able to get it to work, here`s how:
I`ve found an old Pen drive with slax 6.09. It was able to boot - OK; Moved the old slax to the usb hdd & ran bootinst.sh (as root). Boots w success. Then I decided to remix the remix:
- took the vmlinuz (kernel) from my remix-07-sp2 "boot" folder & replaced the original; copied the initrd.lz and renamed it to initrd.gz; re-ran bootinst.sh from old slax;
- copied the slax-remix-v07.sgn to slax folder (next to livecd.sgn) & tried to boot - success, but no modules were found so it failed to start init.
- copied the "base" & "optional" folders w remix-v07 .lzm images & tried to boot - classic slax boot art-work shows but then remix loads.
For me this looks like there is a relat. rare problem with syslinux used in remix-v07

Disabling numlock startup really helped (didn`t know that there is such scrut) - the keyboard is in the normal state.
Bootable_NoEmulation.img appears when one extracts a bootable .ISO image with some archivers.

KDE4 has damn big number of dependencies (qt-4.6, python-2.6, PyQt4, xine-libs, ffmpeg etc) it would be very hard (or almost impossible) to squeeze everything in 200MB iso.

thanks for pointing me toward that info. I have pulled the 2.6.34 kernel and tried and build with the zen patch and the pacthes you have in the remix-v07-patchs.zip file. Do both the Zen patch and the ones in the zip need to be done to the kernel? Also in what order do they need to be done? Any help would be great
@TKBros: The current KDE(3.5.x) in remix-07 seems to work well(stable) for me (I`m still testing it). So I`m pleased.
@mierdamann Sp2 is pack of bugfixes(AFAIK) which is easy to apply - just copy over the original.
@fanthom: The things got strange again - it works now (copied all original remix-v07 files over it). Now I`m wiping the entire partition w dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb1. I`ll try again w clean disk and clean remix-v07-w-sp2 copied over... could be faulty hardware (hdd) or corrupted FS ( but why then it worked under qemu ?! ). I`ll never understand, but as long as it`s working I`m happy.
Does anybody know how to set chmod -r-w-r-r (read, write, read, read) files being in a folder?
I tried this command in console: chmod 644 /directory_with_files/
but it was unsuccessfully. Through the menu of Midnight Commander to expose chmod manually, will occupy a lot of time. Thanks.

Hello. I have made an observation that might solve you're problem. I too have almost none lzm options in konqueror in slax if the lzm files are located on my ntfs partitions (i run slax from hdd), BUT if I copy the lzm packages to the desktop wich is in the virtual fs or whatever slax loads to, then all options are present and working. I dont know if this is a problem or intended behavior but maybe it will be the same for you.

Just tested the Mplayer-r31288-vaapi+mt-fanthom.sq4.lzm with the suggested test clip and it worked very good. 'system:/media/sdb1/' is not a valid path. open konqueror, go to home directory first and then navigate to '/media/sdb1/' - you'll get what you want then.
Hello. I would like to ask for some information regarding slax modification. I want to update some parts and delete the old ones. I unpacked firefox module and updated it to 3.6.8 that was easy because it was a module containing only one thing. How do i update pakages that are part of biger modules ? For example i want to replace old mplayer with the new one in this thread, but how can i remove the old one. I mean is there something like a package manager that can tell me all files included in a package so that i can manualy remove them from the modules and replace with new ones (and get rid of useless ones like kdegames)? I tried slackyd but its info option gives only basic info like file version and size but i basically need to know all files it contains.
I think it's less of an effort to just build a new module.
If you download the slackware package of a program, you can easily convert it to a slax module by using
the tgz2lzm command.
debian packages should work too (deb2lzm)
To compile a program from source (in a temp. directory and heavily customized options using the .configure
command and finishing with the dir2lzm command) is kind a time consuming..

you can find all details about each package in /var/log/packages/package_name. all files are listed there.
BTW - in remix-v08 i'm gonna include latest Mplayer with updated libva+multithread+vdpau so maybe it's worth waiting :)

as I use Slax Remix not just on USB and CD, but also very successfully on VMware and Virtualbox, I wonder if I can increase performance a bit, when I would use VMwares VMI (Transparent Paravirtualisation) enabled in the kernel. I looked at /usr/src/linux/.config and found the entry "# CONFIG_PARA_VIRT_GUEST is not set" and I assume I would need to set this and recompile the kernel in order to enable Paravirtualization? Do you have any experience whether this is worth it? Any hints what I need to watch when recompiling? Could you please send me your kernel sources or can I just grab them from kernel.org? Maybe if it is worth it, could you please include this in future kernels?

Is it possible to run text mode in high resolution? When i start slax text mode it runs on 1024x768 but my LCD mon is 1440x900 and low rez looks very ugly and so little text fits in the screen. I run the remix on a hd4650 card with the module driver 10.6 from here. I boot with grub4dos from HDD and tried some vga= options with codes foe 1440x900 found on wikipedia but none of them work - give error or have no effect. In X mode the rezolution is ok. I tried adding mode 1440x900 in fb.modes but that had no effect eather.

this is what I also thought, but with kernel 2.6.34.1 once I did make modules; install modules
1.) There are quite some more modules in /lib/modules/2.6.34.1-remix as I found in initrd.lz. Do I only use the ones from initrd.lz?
2.) Some modules seem to be larger as in initrd.lz and I wonder if I can repack them since initrd.lz is limited in size?
3.) Some libs like libgcc_s.so.1 in initrd.lz don't seem to exist in /lib or have even a bigger version?
4.) What about all the modules.* files in /lib/modules/2.6.34.1-remix? Some are quite a bit larger as in initrd.lz!

as it's for testing purpose only - would be much easier if you could enable PARAVIRT option on 2.6.34 kernel (not 2.6.34.1) so replacing vmlinuz would be enough i believe.
if you still want to go with 2.6.34.1 then you need to follow beny's advices. use .config from 2.6.34 (make oldconfig) to avoid problems, replace vmlinuz, kernel modules in initrd.lz (only those ones which are already there!) and 001-core. you can strip kernel modules down from debugging symbols as descriped in documentation so size will be smaller. be aware of new path /lib/modules/2.6.34.1-remix in initrd and 001-core.

pls edit /etc/rc.d/rc.S and comment out (add # at the begining of line) or remove totally LVM check. other services are also placed in /etc/rc.d/rc.M file.
ok thanks, but now there is another problem, i have two ntfs partitions in a 80gb disk, 73gb and 6gb. not all files are showed on the 73gb one and on the 6gb directly shows nothing. it works fine in slax 6.12 and on other systems too.

It would depend on when you plugged in the device :)
Why?
if you plug in the device with remix already running, you would see your disk/device in /media/disk, /media/disk-1, ..., /media/diskX
if it was plugged in when remix was starting your devices would be in
/mnt/
either
/mnt/sdX or
/mnt/hdY
as for the not all files are shown, you would probably need language modules?, since not all characters are shown, plus the locale that
you could be using? This has happened to me as several files have weird characters, but I can see them :)

Can you please include the kdm-fix module in remix-08 or fix youreself kdm or add other login manager that will allow to switch between the 3 included desktops in slax remix(kde,lxde,openbox) without the need to reboot the system?
That doesn't work. When i press ctrl+alt+backspace KDE is terminated but it restarts immediately. If i add the kdm-fix module ctrl+alt+backspace terminates KDE and starts kdm where i can choose sesion but lxde is not listed - only openbox and KDE.

lzm_add - get lzm-module from repository, copy it to /slax/modules and automatic activate lzm module. After activation it show decencies in terminal.
In a future it is possible to make decencies check and fetching all necessary modules automatically.

This is maybe a obsolete question but, the remix 08 will have all new drivers in 2.6.35 compiled in right. Like the support for atheros ath9271 chips and ralink rt3070/rt3090.
Has anyone tried installing mstcorefonts in remix or normal slax. In Ubuntu i extract the msfonts in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ and some config files in /etc/fonts/ but in slax this has no effect. The only success i had is to extract the msfont files in the kde special path fonts:/ in konqueror and rebuilding the font cach with 'fc-cache -f -v'. I don't know where fonts:/ points to in the file system. This allows me to select tahoma and other ms fonts but the config files for them don't seam to have effect and the fonts are not antyalized and therefore ugly fuzzy. I need the msfonts for gtk applications. The included free fonts in slax look good in kde qt applications but they are huge and ugly in all gtk based.
I like to build a module with 2.6.34 kernel sources and your remix 07 patches included that I can use in order to build modified Slax Remix kernels, etc.
Can I overwrite the existing files in /usr/src/linux-2.6.34-remix or should I rather put them /usr/src/linux-2.6.34?
Why do I need the existing kernel-stubs (crippled kernel) at all? For compilation of some software, since it carries headers, etc.?
Can you please activate the PARAVIRT Options for Slax Remix 08 Beta? VMI seems to be deprecated, though, but all the other options should be beneficial for VMware/VirtualBox ...

I Can't get a network connection (to the internet) in slax-remix when running it in qemu.
Host system: Ubuntu 10.04
qemu -version: "QEMU PC emulator version 0.12.3 (qemu-kvm-0.12.3), Copyright (c) 2003-2008 Fabrice Bellard"
(I downloaded the needed network rom files)
(apt-get installed it)
Without extra network options, "ifconfig" only shows the "lo" (localhost), no sign of eth0.
lspci does show:
"00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 20)".
which is the same as shown in slax 6.1.2, where networking does work, probably something to do with
the slax 6.1.2 kernel supporting that nic.
After applying the argument "net nic,model=ne2k_pci" I did manage to get the eth0 interface
with, IP address, but it's not a good one, it starts with 169.x.x.x as you know, this isn't an
IP address that get's you a connection to the internet.
It's like the (qemu)DHCP server does not provide a valid IP-address.
Setting the default IP address (10.0.2.12) for qemu clients, doesn't solve the problem neither.
Which nic,model card does work with slax-remix in qemu?
Which arguments do I have to alter/add?

my laptop has 3 speakers for sound 1 under my laptop and that is work in v7 "that speaker is not default for laptop" and 2 stereo speaker near my keyboard and they default

1) give your kernel different name - search google if you dont know how - (ie 2.6.34-syntux) and put crippled sources (or full sources) in /usr/src/linux-2.6.34-syntux.
2) yes - crippled sources contains headers and .config which are needed for plenty of packages
3) sorry - i need to reject 'PARAVIRT Options' as it can slow down the system when run in real mode. pls compile your own kernel or i'll do it for you (not a big deal so dont hesitate to ask).

finally found some time to compile 2.6.35 kernel - works stable so far (1 hour) :)
now userland, pull new stuff, fix documentation, ...., ...., - hopefully v08-BETA will be out in the middle of week.

Thanks. I succeeded to compile a new kernel with PARAVIRT Options, but I am not sure whether it is really that much faster? Still experimenting.
Maybe I have to use SCSI with VMware, because this is recommendeded and has maybe some paravirtual support, since it is called SCSI Paravirtual driver?
Why do you recommend to better have my new kernel in a separate directory like 2.6.34-syntux? For still being able to use the old kernel?
You can leave the PARAVIRT Options out of the official kernel, since I should now be able to help myself now ... Learning a lot with Slax Remix :) Thank You, fanthom :)!

Can you tell which files I have to change in order get a different startbutton icon (shamrock/clover) and the Slax-Remix Band on the left?
I know I can research, but maybe someone can just tell me the filenames? Maybe you can also point me out to the old theme that was used with older versions of Slax Remix?
Not to get me wrong. I really like the nice shamrock, etc. but like to customize a bit by myself :)

1) kernel name doesn't matter until you wont mix them up :)
2) paravirt wont be enabled so, especially that i have removed all DEPRECATED options now. hopefully it wont cause big troubles for the users.

i think it might be a problem actually - i got this output from konqueror: (process:25695): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_new: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_OBJECT (object_type)' failed
KCrash: Application 'nspluginviewer' crashing...
i presume that newer version of glib is not compatible with old konqueror. firefox works nice anyway.

While I understand and share your motivation to keep Slax Remix core small, I am also a bit concerned that you maybe cut down too much ;)?
I am not using them often, but some of the X11-tools, like xkill, xmodmap and tools like netwatch, etc. can be quite handy sometimes.
Even kuickshow was nice when doing picture dia-shows, but probably there are better alternatives? Ideas are welcome :)
Maybe you could put those packages in a separate lzm module that people can download extra?

Hello, I seem to have a problem with symbolic link at the start up, it is just befor to login when I startup with followin cheat code to start in text mode, too in the ram.
I falled up on this message the first time when I tried to prevent compiz to autostart by following autoexec: autoexec=rm /root/.kde/Autostart/startcompiz.sh;xconf;kdm
with nochange and cp2ram cheetcode.
i agree with ponce, xterm is part of LXDE, the positive side is if slax user choose LXDE n KDE 3 still on the less than 200Mb (i hope)
and if they choose KDE 4 just a matter of replacing KDE 3 with KDE 4 ( hoping not to many change in core n X libs )
